EXPLANATION TEXT

 What is Explanation Text?


Explanation text is a type of non-fiction text that explains a process (for example, how
something works or why something happens). It usually includes a sequence of events
(explaining how) and provides reasons for a process or phenomenon (why)

 The Purpose
- To tells processes relating to forming of natural, social, scientific, and cultural
phenomena.
- To explain how or why something happens.

 Generic Structure
1. General statement
Introducing or identifying the phenomenon. Usually contains of why this
phenomenon is important to be explained.
2. Sequenced explanations
This is the main element of explanation text. It explain the important points of the
topic. The explanation of why or how a phenomenon happens. This part can be
more than one paragraph.
3. Conclusion
This is the conclusion of the text. It contains a strong ending paragraph or
sentence that states the overall statement and explanation previously. Sometimes,
it is the last step of the sequenced explanation.
4. Visual
The images or visuals provided are useful for clarifying existing explanation texts.

 Language Features
1. Focus on general group rather than specific.
2. Use simple present tense.
3. Action verbs (E.g. breaks, erupts, etc.)
4. Linking verbs (in general, rather, for instance, etc.)
5. Use of technical terms and language relevant to the subject.
6. Passive voice may be used.
7. Conjunction (to make connections like and, but, etc)
8. Gives a detailed description to create a rich meaning.

 Types of Explanation Text


1. Sequential (sekuensial) : These detail the stages in an event.
2. Causal (kausal) : Details what causes the change from one stage to the next.
3. Theoretical (teoritis) : Details the possible phenomena behind a natural or created
process that is not fully understood.
4. Factorial and consequential (faktorial dan konsekuensi) : Explanations explain effects
and outcomes of processes.
