DLP Lesson 4 - Week 1

The lesson plan summarizes how to factor quadratic trinomials. It outlines the objectives of being able to identify perfect square trinomials, factor quadratic trinomials using steps, and solve problems involving factored trinomials. The plan details the two conditions for factoring trinomials - when the leading coefficient is 1 and when it is not. Students are walked through examples of factoring trinomials for each condition and applying the steps. They then practice factoring additional trinomials. The lesson concludes by defining key terms and having students reflect on applications of factoring in daily life.

SEMI DETAILED LESSON PLAN

I. Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the student should be able to:
a. identified whether the given expression is a perfect square trinomial or not,
b. factored completely quadratic trinomials using steps, and
c. solved problems involving factors of trinomials accurately.

II. Subject Matter

Topic: Factoring Polynomial – Case 4 General Trinomial

References: Grade 8 –Mathematics (Module Quarter 1- Module 1)

Materials: Power Point Presentation, Chalk Board

III. Procedure
A. Preliminary Activities
1. Prayer
2. Checking of attendance
3. Review
4. Classroom Rules

B. Motivation
Determine the following trinomials whether condition 1 or condition 2;
1. 6 x 2−7 x +2 Condition 2
2
2. x + 5 x−14 Condition 1
2
3. 4 x −3 x −10 Condition 2
2
4. x −4 x−32 Condition 1
2
5. x + 11 x +18 Condition 1

C. Presentation
2
ax +bx +c

Where a is called the leading coefficient,

b is a middle term, and
c is a constant

To factor a trinomial ax2 + bx + c, it is divided into two conditions;

Condition 1 – when the leading coefficient is 1.
Condition 2 – when the leading coefficient is not 1.
CONDITION 1: Leading coefficient is 1.
Illustrative Example

Factor: x 2+ 5 x−14

Step 1: Factor the first term

(x +___ ) (x +___ )

Step 2: List all possible pair of factors of the constant (-14), and identify if it is
equal to the middle term (5) when added.

Factors of (-14) Is it equal to 5 when added?

1 and -14 No
-1 and 14 No
2 and -7 No
-2 and 7 Yes

Step 3: Write the correct factors as your final answer.

2
x + 5 x−14 = (x – 2) (x + 7)

CONDITION 2: Leading coefficient is not 1.

Illustrative Example

Factor: 6 x 2−7 x +2

Step 1: Find the product ac.

ac = (6)(2) = 12

Step 2: List all possible pair of factors of ac (12) and identify if it is equal to b (-7)
when added.

Factors of 12 Is it equal to -7 when added?

1 and 12 No
-1 and -12 No
2 and 6 No
-2 and -6 No
3 and 4 No
-3 and -4 Yes
Step 3: Replace b as the sum of the correct factors

6 x 2−3 x−4 x

Step 4: Group the terms into two binomials.

( 6 x 2−3 x ) +(−4 x +2)

Step 5: Factor out the GCF for each group.

3 x ( 2 x−1 )−2(2 x−1)

Step 6: Factor out the common polynomial (2x - 1).

(2x - 1)(3x - 2)

D. Application

Direction: Factor each polynomial.

1. x 2+ 5 x + 4 (x + 1) (x + 4)
2. x 2−9 x−10 (x + 1) (x – 10)
3. 2 x2 +9 x +4 (x + 4) (2x + 1)

E. Generalization
 What is a trinomial?
 What are the steps in factoring trinomials?
 What concepts have you learned from factoring that can be applied in your daily
living?
