C. Abstraction

Teaching conflict requires learners to know what conflict is.

 Conflict: A struggle between opposing forces.

 Internal Conflict: A struggle a character has within him or herself.
 External Conflict: A struggle a character has with an outside force.

Categorizing conflicts makes identifying specific conflicts in a story much simpler:

 Person vs. Person. As the name implies, this conflict involves one person
battling another person.
 Person vs. Self. When a character has a difficult decision to make, he or she
experiences an internal, or person vs. self-conflict.

Example:

 Person vs. Supernatural. This conflict involves supernatural forces.

 Person vs. Nature. Characters battling the forces of nature make up this popular
conflict type.
 Individual vs. Society. What happens when society dictates things should be
one way, but a character (or real life human-being) decides things should be
another way? An individual vs. Society conflict.
