Exercise 9 KOM 6115 SPANOVA

This document describes a split-plot ANOVA study that analyzed the effectiveness of communication skills training on 60 students over 3 semesters. The study had two independent variables: gender (between-subjects) and semester (repeated measures, within-subjects). Communication skill score was the dependent variable. The study aimed to identify the effect of the training across semesters and compare effects between gender groups. Steps for conducting a split-plot ANOVA in SPSS are provided, including entering variables, selecting tests, and interpreting output.

ADVANCE STATISTICS FOR COMMUNICATION RESEARCH

EXERCISE 9

Split-plot ANOVA (SPANOVA

Number of respondents: 60 communication students

Variable of research: Measure

Independent Variable:
1. Gender 1= Male
2= Female

2. Semester (Repeated measures) 1=Semester 1

2=Semester 2
3=Semester 3
Dependent Variable
1. Communication Skill Score (Interval/Ratio)

Experimental Study
Identify the effectiveness of Communication Skills Training on Student Communication
Skills (dependent variables) in the Department of Communication. The training was
conducted for three semesters (independent variable 1, repeated measures, as within
group) and comparisons were made between men's and women's groups (independent
variables 2, as between group)

Research Objective
1. To identify the effect of Communication Training in different semester (repeated
measures) on communication skill by comparing the gender groups.
STEP FOR DATA ANALYSIS
SPANOVA ANALYSIS

1. Click Analyze
2. Select General Linear Model
3. Click Repeated Measure
4. Type the independent variable 1 (semester) in the Within-Subject Factor Name box,
and each of the 3 (for 3 repeated semesters) in the Number of Levels box
5. Click the Add button
6. Click the Define button
7. Enter the Communication Skill scores each semester in sequence (one by one) into the
box under Within-Subjects Variable (semester)
8. Enter a group variable (Gender) in the box under Between-Subjects Factor (s)
9. Click the Plots button  Repeated Measure: Profile Plot dialog box.
10. Enter the semester variables under the factors into the box under the Horizontal Axis.
And enter the variable group (gender) in the Separate Lines box.
11. Click the Add button,
12. Click the Continue button
13. Click the Option button  Repeated Measure: Options dialog box
14. Enter the semester variables in the box under Display Means for.
15. Tick Compare main effects
16. Select the Benferroni method in the Confidence interval adjustment box.
17. Tick Descriptive statistics, Estimates of effect size, Observed power and
Homogenity tests under Display.
18. Click Continue
19. Click OK
1. Klik Analyze
2. Pilih General Linear Model

tiap angka 3 (sebab 3 semester berulang) dalam petak Number of Levels
5. Klik butang Add
6. Klik butang Define
7. Masukkan skor Communication Skill setiap semester mengikut urutan (satu demi
Lines.
