Kapitel 1. IELTS Listining

30 minutes task
10 min extra time – write answers onto a separate sheet

4 separate sections
Each section is a little different than the section before
Each section has a different focus
- Section 1: Conversion between two people
- Section 2: Monologue on a general topic
- Section 3: Conservation between 2 or 3 people in an academic context
- Section 4: Monologue in an academic context

All section will be heard only once!!!

Before the listening – you get extra time to read the question (do it carefully!) (35-34 sec
before each section)
40 Questions/10 Question per section
The record use different phrases/words with same meaning- as in the question

Type of question:
- Short-answer question
- Sentence completion
- Forms/notes/tables/flow-charts/summary completion
- Numbers/words

Read the question carefully
The questions in the Listening paper are in the same order as the information you hear (!!)
Learn to understand the variety of accents of English-speaking countries

Introduction (Context): (not testet)


- Information: Who the people are, what they are talking about, and why

Short Break:
Read through the first 10 question (first section)
Predict how many speaker you will hear at this section

Start listening:
Write/Remember carefully the name/s and place of the conversation
Names/Places/Numbers will spell out (- English spelling training!)
Different accents from native english-speakers (british, American, Canadian, australian, new
Zealand accents) (- use non-commerial national radio station/ podcast to improve the
understanding of all accents)

Special categories/explanation:
- “No more than two words” = means 1 or 2 words
- “No more than one word and / or a number” = means 2 or more words are wrong
- “Distractor” = You will hear two or more potential answer to each question, but only
one is correct (distractor is the incorrect answer (Ausschlussantwort))
- Technical terms in the question will usually be explain
- Read tables from left to right (always) and pay attention to the heading
- Attempt all questions (no penalties for incorrect answers)
- Prepared to hear a potential answer which isn’t right (two people discuss a plan, the
first agree meeting at a certain time, but one remember they cant so they shift the
time)
- Pay attention to the number of (allowed) words (hyphenated words are considered as
one, a date is considered as one number)
- Focus on what the speaker is saying, not how they is saying
- Don’t note complete sentences

Multiple-Choice-Question: Underline important keywords/phrasen (at reading time) that make


the answer different to other
Labelling a map or plan:
- studying the plan before listing the directions carefully
- Answer to yourself, what is it a map of, name of landmarks, where is the entrance,
where is the centre?
- Marking the way during listening directly on the map
- Distractors are extra buildings, landmarks, ..
Map completion task and diagram completion task: (???)

Matching Task: Were discussed liked written in the question (different options in box are
random order -look for the right option) (-listen to national radio station programs that discuss
topical issues)

Kapitel 2. IELTS Reading

60 min test
3 section within 40 questions, so 12-13 question in each section
No extra time for transferring the answer
Each section is a little more diffiult than the section before
Each section has a different focus
Mixture of long and short texts of more general natural, related to worked situation
Improve your speed-reading skills (by reading english newspaper)

In the question used different words/phrases with the same meaning as in the text (-learn
synonyms)
In each section 12-13 question in 1-3 different question types
Question types are:
- Sentences completion
- Summary, notes, tables, flow-cart completion
- Short-answer question
- Diagram label completion
- Multiple-choice
- Matching information
- Matching heading
- Matching features
- Matching sentence ending
- Summary completion

Most texts have heading, subheading, footing, … read them carefully (also important
information)
Mark the important information in the question with markers
Attention if there where ask for plural

Timing – most important:


Timing is the most important part in the reading session (!!)
Finish each section in less than 20 mins
Read the passage as quick as possible (up to 3 mins)
Look at the information to see what information do you need (up to 1 min)
Spend 12-13 min reading the passage in detail and answer the question
If one answer takes too long – move on
Use 3-4 mins to transfer your answer, checking, filling unknowing gaps

First task: Skimming (=Querlesen)


- Reading quickly to find the main points (concentrating on content words, like nouns
and verbs)
- Not reading in details
- Getting a idea of the text
- Skim read 100 words in 20-30 sec

Second task: Scanning for detail

- Use highlight pens to locate key words for the questions (use different colour for each
task)

How to solve: Matching the heading


(Don’t try to match words in the heading to words in passage. The whole idea must fit!!!)
- Reading the heading so that you are familiar with them
- Skim read the whole passage to get the overall meaning
- Read the first paragraph and decide with heading might fit
- Re-read the paragraph and choose the heading that best summarises it
- Repeat

How to solve: Understanding the main point


- List of given statements: you have to decide whether they are
o True (statement agree with the information in the text)
o False (statement is incorrect and does not agree with the information in the
text)
o Not given (you cannot say whether the statement is true or false because
there is no information about this in the text)
o A view (personal option)
o A claim (statement made by the writer and presented as fact)

How to solve: Sentence ending:


- Start with skim reading the passage to locate the information in the sentence
beginning
- Read the relevant part of the passage carefully
- Choose the best ending wisely

Identify theories and options (-read the guardian, the times, the new Yorker daily)

How to solve: matching features


- Different options listed in a box -> you nned to match them to the questions
(sentences that paraphrases the information in the passage)
- Questions will not be the same as in the passage
- Some question you need to match to an action/study/option/theory
- Highlight each time the names appear at the passage (!)
- Questions will not be in the right order
- Some people in the list may be distractors, be careful
- You may not be use all letters

How to solve: Multiple-Choice questions


- Begin with a direct question and then four possible answers or
- Begin with a incomplete sentence and then have four possible endings

Most difficult section 3- feature arguments for and against a specific idea or theory, present a
discussion of different arguments
Be aware of the writes overall tone: write choice of words often indicates their attitude toward
a topic

Process:
- Skim reading (2 mins) to get the main ideas
- Read again and highlight any adjectives that you think indicates the main idea or the
personal option

How to solve: Summary completion

- Two types: One Type with box with possible answer (these are actual words from the
passage) or one without box (there you need to choose the words form the passage
to complete the summary)
o Look in the Box of possible answers and decides what type of word each one
is (noun, verb)
o Read the summary carefully and decide what type of word need to be filled
o Complete and read the whole text again

Kapitel 3. IELTS Writing

General information

Last one hour, 2 writing sections


Section 2 carriers more marks than section 1
Section 1: 20 mins (respond to a given situation (by writing a letter)), you may be asked to
request information or explain a situation)
Section 2: 40 mins (write an essay in response to a point of view, argument or problem)
Section 2 get twice as many points as section 1

Criteria:
- Task achievement:
o At section 1:
 Question fully answered
 Written 150 words
o At section 2:
 Address all points in the question
 Provide balance arguments / support your idea with evidence and
example
 Where all of your ideas relevant (to the questions)
 Written 250 words
o Both sections:
 Easy to understand
 Ideas well organised and clearly linked
 Use of wide range of vocabulary (accurately and effectively)
 Use of wide range of grammatical structures (accurately and
effectively)

Don’t use bullet points, notes or abbreviations or prepared answers


If you give an information that is incorrect or inaccurate then you will receive a lower score
Use different words (synonyms) than in the diagram/question to higher your score
Write numbers as words
Know who much 150/250 words are (no counting at exam)
Leave at least 3 mins at the end of session to correct spelling, grammar, punctation

- List of Example trough pattern: ‘(A and B)(A,B and C)


- No question mark in the essay
- No exclamation point in the essay
- No informal phrases ‘more and more’ ‘bigger and bigger’ ‘greater and greater’ – use
‘increasing number’ or ‘significantly large number’ ‘a growing increase’ ‘
- Begin sentence with ‘In addition/ Futhermore’ ‘However’, ‘Since’, ‘As a result’
- First sentence of each body paragraph should be a topic sentence
- Keep the sentence short and linked
- No contractions

- No use of pronouns in the body paragraph (you/we/I)
- Use passive (not active) tense
- Don’t tell the reader at the introduction what you’re going to do (In this essay I will ..)
- Aviod using absolutes (Don’t use alle/every/ none/ only/ always/..)

Impersonal opinion:
- It cannot be denied that
- Many argue that
- It is undeniable
- Some people argue that

Personal opinion:
- In my opinion/view:
- In my mind
- It seems to me that
- I believe that

Introduce example:
- For instance
- For example
- ..such as…
- …particularly

Add more point the same topic:


- Furthermore
- Moreover
- In addition
- … as well

Make contrasting points:


- However…
- While/whereas
- Nonetheless / Nevertheless
- In/By contrast
- Despite the fact that

Balance/Contrasting statements:
- While it is true to say that…, in fact/actually…

Academic Writing (Additional information):


So the information must accurately describe the information presented in the visual
(!) Don’t draw conclusion that aren’t supported by the information you are given
Use the passive voice to describing the visual information, rather than giving your own ideas
Describe future predictions (in passive form) like estimate/predict/forecast
Giving the key difference and key similarities in the data (make sure comparisons where
relevant)
(!) Give a one-sentence overview / summary of the main trends in the chart/graph (you can
also include a sentence of the minor detail overview)

Before writing about the pattern - write notes about:
- Peaks (highest point)
- Troughs (lowest point)
- Period when the figures remain steady (show little or no change)
- Period when the figures remain fluctuate (show a lot of change)
- Comparison (Show similarities)
- Contrast (Show different)

You will lose marks at section 1 if you:


- Leave out data that is important
- Speculate on reasons for the data
- Add information not included in the data
- Write less than 150 words

Task could be:


- Pattern
- Daigram
- Map (know different words for directions/landmarks)

Writing Session 1:

At task 1: writing a letter (in correct style)


- Informal (family/ friend)
- Semi-formal (work collague you know well)
- Formall (business / local newspaper)

Task: You might asked for:


- Request information
- Give personal or factual information
- Explain a problem / situation
- Explain want or need / make a request
- Complain about a service
- Make a suggestion or recommend something

Structure of the Tast:


1. Explains the situation
2. Task of writing a letter
3. Bullet points explain what to write about
4. Tells you how begins

Mark for your letter:


- Answer all the parts of the question?
- Are all ideas relevant?
- Are all ideas well organised, clear and well connected?
- Avioded repeating the word and copy words
- No/few grammar mistakes/ high range of grammatical structural

Writing in this structure:


1. Greeting
2. Opening statements (introduce yourself, say why you are writing)
3. Explain the situation
4. Describe the problems with the house

5. Say what you would like to happen
6. Closing statements (signal the end of the letter)
7. End the letter

Writing Session 2:1

Consists of:
- One or two statements on a topic OR a direct quotation giving someones opinion on a
topic
- Specific task or question for you to answer
- Types of idea you need to include in you answer

Before you write – make a plan (use: 4-5 mins time)


Write 250 words
Read letter page on newspaper to improve this se

You MUST include:


- Own opinion about the statement
- Reasons for your opinion

You CAN include:


- Example from your own personal experience- MUST be relevant to the question

Get markes on:


- Writing 250 words
- Explaining your own opinion on the topic
- Supporting your idea (with personal examples / your knowledge of the world)
- Include only relevant idea

Produce a balanced answer (equally/both side)

Ideas are organised into separate paragraphs


Linking the ideas clearly together
Avoid repeating words from the questions and phrases
Use a wide range of words/phrases/sentence structure (- use synonyms, use a pronoun to
refer back to an idea, use a group noun)
Use the correct style and formal style (no abbreviations / no casual style)

Starting: by restarting the question in your own words (don’t copy words)

Session 2 is given about:


- Own your views or attitude to the topic, by using:
o Adverbs (personally / probably)
o Modals (might / could)
o Phrases (In my view)
o Verbs (Appear to be / Seem to be)
o Don’t use often ‘I think’, ‘I Know’

Ending: by writing a conclusion


- Brief summary of your arguments and ideas
- Place for own opinion

Training handwriting (quick/neat/legible)

Kapitel 4: IELTS Speaking

General Information

Interview last 11-14 mins

Section 1: (4-5 mins):


- Ask questions about familiar topics (hobbies, likes, dislikes, daily routines)

Section 2: (3-4 mins):


- Get a booklet, showing a topic and some suggestions on it
- You can write notes: 1 min (write down key notes)
- Need about the topic 1-2 mins
- Examiner ask you follow-up question

Section 3: (4-5 mins):


- Ask more detailed and more abstract questions (to section 2)

Marks will get for:


- Speak in fluent way (easy to understand)?
- Link your ideas together clearly?
- Use accurately/effectivley or attempt a wide range of vocabulary?
- Explain your idea even if you don’t know a particular word?
- Use higher-level vocabulary accurately?
- Use a wide range of grammatical structures?
- Are your sentence accurate?
- Is your spoken language clear (easy to understand)?
- Use stress and intonation (to add extra meaning)?
- With individual words (use stress accurately)?

Make good eye contact to your examiner from the moment you enter the room (!)
Answer in a polite and friendly way
Body language is also part of communication -> use a appropriate body language
Listen carefully to the tense of the question – to use the correct tense at the answer

Speaking Section 1:
- What do you like most about your home town/city? [Why?]
- Is your home town/city a popular place for tourists to visit? [Why/Why not?]
- Do you think your home town/city has changed much in recent years? [Why/Why
not?]
- What food is typical of your home country? [Why do you think that is?]
- Are there any special festivals or celebrations in your town/city? [Can you tell me
about that?]
- What advice would you give to a visitor to your town/city? [Why?]

Seaking Section 2:
- Get a booklet – four instructions on your booklet telling you what to talk about
- You asked to choose a person, place, time, thing- and explain why
- Describe one or two specific example and talk about your own feelings / reaction
- You can write notes: 1 min (write down key notes) – only look briefly at the notes (eye
contact to examiner)

- Need about the topic 1-2 mins
- Examiner ask you follow-up question

Example: Question 2:
- Describe a person who has been an important influence in your life
- You should say:
o Who this person is and how long you have know him or her
o Why you chose this person
o How this person has influenced your life
- And explain how you feel about him/her

Linking words: after, that, because of this, but, also

Speaking Section 3:
- Topics/ questions more general/ abstract
- Questions more difficult
- Listen carefully: to answer fully / appropriately
- Important to have your own opinion
- Examiner will give you an opinion and ask you ‘would you agree with that?’
o Answer: ‘No, not at all’;
o ‘Well, I think there are valid points for both’;
o ‘ I totally agree with that’
o ‘I completely disagree’
o ‘I can see you point, but..’
o ‘Actually, I think it depends on the situation/country/person…’
o ‘It seems to me that there are two sides to consider’
