1.2 The annual rainfall on a catchment with an area of 600 km2 is 820 mm. The surface
runoff is 330 mm/year and it is calculated that 210 x 105 m3 of water evaporates in a
year. At present 600 x 106 litres of water is abstracted daily from wells. Calculate the
available groundwater in mm/year. (8)

WTE2602 MAJOR TEST 3 2023-Sem 1
2.1 Calculate the discharge of a trapezoidal channel with a bottom width of 6.069 m, side
slope 1:1, flow depth of 1 220 mm, slope of 0.0009 and Manning’s coefficient of 0.025.
Analyse the flow, for a 100 cm wide rectangular channel with a crump weir. The
following estimation have been made:
3.1. Use the step by step method to calculate the discharge through the crest crump
weir. Do only 4 iterations. (15)
3.2 Name two flow measuring devices that can be used to measure flow. Do not
mention the crest crump weir that was given in this question. (2)
3.3 Discuss what you would use the flow measurement data for? (3)
