Algebra 2 – Equations and Inequalities

Lesson:
Properties of Real Numbers

Objective:
I can:
• Use the commutative and associative properties
• Use the properties of identity, inverse, and zero
• Simplify expressions using the Distributive Property

Warm Up:
Students will simplifying expressions with integers, fractions, and decimals.

Active Modeling/Guided Notes(Power Point Presentations):

Students will learn how to and practice simplifying algebraic expressions and evaluating algebraic expressions
using properties of real numbers
• Order of Operations
• Combining Like Terms
• Distributive Property
• Commutative Property
• Inverse Property
• Associative Property

We review big ideas and key vocabulary to develop a baseline level of communication and to better
understanding the concepts of real numbers and the interconnectedness:
• Real numbers
• Irrational numbers
• Rational numbers
• Integers
• Whole numbers

Students will then learn about the properties of real numbers and will practice applying those properties to
example and practice problems

Cooperative Learning Structure

Students will engage in an Around The Room activity where they will travel around the room to practice
simplifying algebraic expressions using the properties practiced and learned.

Independent Practice:
Students will practice applying the properties of real number to simplify algebraic expressions

Exit Slip/Formative Assessments:

Students will display their ability to simplify algebraic expressions by applying the properties of real numbers.

Guided Notes- Applying Properties of Real Numbers

Objective:

Big Ideas Review and Key Terminology

Whole Numbers -are the counting numbers including 0.

Integers- Positive and negative whole numbers.

Rational Numbers – Are numbers that can be written as a fraction a/b, have terminating decimals
and have repeating decimals.

Irrational Numbers -Numbers that cannot be made into a simple fraction. Numbers that have a
decimal that keeps going and going and is non-repeating

Real Numbers -The set of rational numbers and irrational numbers comprise the set of real numbers.
