Lesson Plan - Properties of Real Numbers
Lesson Plan - Properties of Real Numbers
Lesson:
Properties of Real Numbers
Objective:
I can:
• Use the commutative and associative properties
• Use the properties of identity, inverse, and zero
• Simplify expressions using the Distributive Property
Warm Up:
Students will simplifying expressions with integers, fractions, and decimals.
We review big ideas and key vocabulary to develop a baseline level of communication and to better
understanding the concepts of real numbers and the interconnectedness:
• Real numbers
• Irrational numbers
• Rational numbers
• Integers
• Whole numbers
Students will then learn about the properties of real numbers and will practice applying those properties to
example and practice problems
Independent Practice:
Students will practice applying the properties of real number to simplify algebraic expressions

Warm Up-ANSWERS
Directions: Find the prime factorization of the following numbers:
Example:
48 = 24 • 3
2) Find the prime factorization of 80. 3.) Find the prime factorization of 60.
80= 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 5 60= 2 x 2 x 3 x 5
80 = 24 x 51 60 = 22 x 31 x 51
12= 2 x 2 x 3
LCM = 36
18 = 2 x3x3
LCM = 2 x 2 x 3 x 3
LCM = 72
Directions: Simplify the following expressions:
15 16
86 -7
3𝑥 2 +7x +12
12𝑦 2 10y +13
11) The difference between 12y and 4 12.) Eight more than 5x
12y - 4
8 + 5x
3m – 9 4x – 18
14) June has dimes and quarters in her purse. The number of dimes is seven less than four times the number of
quarters. Let q represent the number of quarters. Write an expression for the number of dimes.

Find the prime factorizations
and least common multiples
of numbers
Objective:
Rational Numbers – Are numbers that can be written as a fraction a/b, have terminating decimals
and have repeating decimals.
Irrational Numbers -Numbers that cannot be made into a simple fraction. Numbers that have a
decimal that keeps going and going and is non-repeating
Real Numbers -The set of rational numbers and irrational numbers comprise the set of real numbers.
