2. Utilize a Riemann sum in determining a definite integral.
3. Use finite sums to approximate the value of definite integrals.
4. Calculate integrals using substitution, parts, partial fractions, and trigonometric methods.
5. Set up definite integrals to calculate areas, volumes and other applications.
6. Use the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus to evaluate definite integrals.
7. Solve separable differential equations.
PLATFORM: This class will be run through WAMAP and NOT Canvas.
See information at the end of the syllabus for help with login. I do not check Canvas, so
please communicate solely through WAMAP messaging or the email at the top of the
syllabus. You can typically expect responses to WAMAP messages or emails with 24-48 hours,
although I rarely check these on weekends.
COURSE FORMAT:
OL – This course is fully online. While there are deadlines for completing assignments, there is
flexibility to organize your study time around your schedule. Even though there are not required
live meetings, I am here to support you and your needs throughout the course. The best way to
reach me is by email or WAMAP message. You can also schedule an appointment to meet with
me using Zoom. All content (including quizzes and exam) will be fully online.
PREREQUISITE: Math& 151 (Basic Mathematics) with a grade of C or better (or placement)
CALCULATORS:
Students are usually required to have a graphing calculator for this course (TI-84, TI-83 Plus
preferred). These may be used for all future math courses at Whatcom. Due to COVID-19, you
may or may not have access to a graphing calculator. You may check out a graphing calculator
from the WCC Library if you wish (Info Here). If you don’t have access to a physical graphing
calculator, you can use these links: Desmos Scientific Calculator (use for calculations), Desmos
Graphing Tool (use for graphing and much more).
CALENDAR:
This is not a self-paced course. You should plan on spending at least 12 hours a week on this class. In
addition to learning new math, you will need to complete homework and quizzes, and may also have to
learn some new technology. It is extremely important that you do not fall behind, because it is very
difficult to catch up. There is an online calendar in WAMAP, and a suggested daily pacing schedule is
available to print in the Getting Started folder as well. We will have quizzes due weekly to help you keep
up with material.
GRADING SCALE:
The following grading scale will be used in this class:
A: 90 – 100; B: 80 – 89; C: 72 – 79; C –: 70 – 71; D: 60 – 69; F: 00 – 59
+/- grades will be given at the discretion of the instructor, but general guidelines are as follows:
90-91.9: A-, 88.0-89.9: B+, and similarly for the other borderline grades.
SPECIAL NOTES:
Mathematically, not participating in the forums will drop your grade an entire letter grade.
Make sure you understand the instructions on the next page regarding the weekly forums.
There is no immediate feedback on the exams since they contain manually graded partial
credit. Make sure you practice checking your work and your understanding of all concepts
and problems. You will be required to show your work on exams and timed quizzes.
Read the forums and watch the videos! They often have good insights, new techniques, and
helpful tips that may not be in the textbook.
Exams: There will be four exams that you can find in the online or printable calendar. You will
need to show work on the questions in these assessments. You will be allowed one page of notes on these
exams and a graphing calculator (or equivalent), but you should do your own work without other books,
websites, people, etc. You can watch the “Exam Structure” video in the Day 1 folder for more detailed
information.
Section Quizzes:
We will have an online section quiz listed in each section of the weekly folders. These are usually due on
Mondays that follow the previous week’s material. These are meant to help you keep up with the
material as well as provide typical problems that may appear on tests. Most quiz questions will be similar
to those found in your homework, though some may use the ideas learned in a slightly different way.
Section quizzes usually contain about 5-15 questions, depending on the amount of material in each
section.
These quizzes will NOT be timed and can be worked on at any time they are available, so you are
encouraged to work on them throughout the week as you complete each section.
You are allowed multiple attempts in the section quizzes, so starting early is always advised.
Section Quizzes should be completed by 11:59 pm on their due date. They will not be
available after this time.
After you have completed a problem (perhaps without any correct responses), you can “retry a
similar problem” with different numbers to try and earn more credit. There is a limit to the
number of retries, with the idea that you learn from previous mistakes.
Important: If you ever feel that you have been shortchanged on a question (such as due to rounding
incorrectly), please let me know. I will look at the question and reassign points if appropriate.
Class Participation:
Weekly forums will be organized according to the material in the weekly folder. Generally, we will have
material to work on Monday through Friday, and have the forum and quizzes due on Sunday. You will
no longer be allowed to post or reply to that week’s forum after 11:59 pm on the due date. You may
always go back and read previous forums.
You will earn 5 points each for your first and second post or reply. Any posts or replies after that
will earn 1 additional point of extra credit for the forum, up to 3 extra points per forum. Your
goal is to earn 10 or more points each week. (Full credit would be 2 posts OR 2 replies OR 1 of
each.) Also, your overall participation grade can only reach a maximum of 110%.
To earn credit, posts and replies should observe the following guidelines:
Work out as much of the problem as you can until you are stuck, or until you have a final answer.
If you have no idea how to start, post the problem and state that.
Good replies show step by step a solution to a posted question or a problem from the homework
or practice quiz. You may also give a few steps worked out as a “jump start” to completing the
problem. You should not post the answer with no work.
If you have no questions during a week and there are no questions to answer, you should post a
worked out solution to a homework or quiz problem that has not been posted yet. Alternatively,
you can post additional resources (like a website or video) you found helpful when learning that
week’s material. You can also post what you struggled with and how you overcame it.
Comments and responses should be thoughtful, contain helpful information to those reading the
post or response, and follow the guidelines above in order to earn credit.
Forums are often the best way to get help when you are stuck. I try to answer questions as much
as possible, but students often beat me to it. If you ever have a question, chances are at least 5
others do as well, so post it to the forum!
Forum grades will be manually updated after the forum due date. I usually update those grades every 2-3
weeks.
HOMEWORK:
Homework assignments will be given by textbook section, and are listed with each sections material
within each weekly folder. Homework assigned in the textbook will not be collected as a part of your
grade; however, quiz and exam questions will be similar to your assigned homework, so it is in your best
interest to complete it and ask questions about it. Homework questions also provide good discussion
material in the weekly forums.
TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS:
WAMAP is being used for this course because of its design to integrate mathematics and its ability to link
quiz questions directly into the forums. Although this is the primary organizational and quiz tool for the
class, there are many other components to the class including the textbook site, posted material, and
videos. Most computers and even mobile devices such as phones, iPad, Android Tablet, etc., will allow
access to WAMAP through a web browser. Chrome is recommended, although other browers may work
fine as well.
TECHNICAL SUPPORT:
For questions about WAMAP, contact your instructor. Here is a link for questions about entering
answers in quizzes: http://www.wamap.org/info/enteringanswers.php

WITHDRAW POLICY:
Withdrawal dates will be the same as face-to-face classes as per the WCC schedule. If you must
withdraw from the course, do so officially through the WCC registrar. The instructor cannot withdraw
you, and if you simply stop participating, you will receive a grade of F. Instructors are also
required to report the last date of participation for everyone receiving an F. If this is early enough
in the quarter, it can result in having to pay back financial aid. Official dates can be found on the
WCC Registration Calendar here: https://www.whatcom.edu/get-started/registration-calendar
