Introduction of the Topic

While
Considering 91/2 ● 91/2 by using the Product Rule, we have 91/2 + ½ = 92/2 = 9.
Take note that √𝟗𝟐 = 9. Similarly, 91/3 ● 91/3● 91/3 = 91/3 + 1/3 +1/3 = 93/3 = 9. Relatively, this
3
is the same as √93 = 𝟗. Hence, we can say that every exponential expression with fractional
exponent can be written as radical form and vice versa.
𝟏
DEFINITION OF 𝒂 𝒏

𝟏
If n is an even positive integer, and a ≥ 0, then 𝒂𝒏 is the non-negative real number
𝟏
such that (𝒂𝒏 )ⁿ = a.
𝟏
If n is an odd positive integer, and a ≥ 0, then 𝒂𝒏 is the non-negative real number
𝟏
such that (𝒂𝒏 )ⁿ = a.

Example:
a. 251/2 = 5 because 52 = 25.
b. 271/3 = 3 because 33 = 27
c. -1251/3 = -5 because (-5)3 = -125

DEFINITION OF 𝒂 𝒏
𝒎
For all positive integers m and n, such that is a fraction in simplest form, and
𝒏
𝒎 𝟏
for all real numbers a for which 𝒂 = (𝒂 )
𝒏 𝒏 m = (am)1/n.

This definition will help us evaluate numbers raised to rational exponents whose base
is a perfect square or a cube, etc. to compensate with the denominator of the rational
exponent.
Example: Evaluate 82/3
82/3 = (2●2●2)2/3
= [(2●2●2)1/3]2
= 22

Example: Evaluate 813/4
813/4 = [(3●3●3●3)1/4]3

Example: Evaluate (-27)2/3
(-27)2/3 = [(-3●-3●-3)1/3]2
= (-3)2

PROPERTIES OF RATIONAL EXPONENT
Though the effect of a rational exponent in its base is quite different from its whole
number exponent counterpart, it is still governed by the same Law of Exponent as we simplify
algebraic expressions involving rational exponent.

If p, q, and r are rational numbers, and a and b are positive real numbers, then,

DEFINITION OF √𝒃
Previously, we determine the relationship between the concept of rational exponent
and radical (91/2 ● 91/2 = 91/2 + 1/2 = 91 = 9. This means that 91/2 = √𝟗 = 3). In this case,
we can express any real number raised in a rational exponent into its radical form:
𝟏
If n is a positive integer and b is any real number such that 𝒃𝒏 is a real number,
𝟏
𝒏
then 𝒃𝒏 = √𝒃.

Note: If b raised to 1 over n is equal to the nth root of b, then x raised to one half is equal to the square root
of x.
𝟏
Example 1: Express 𝒙𝟐 in its radical form.
𝟏 𝟏
𝒃𝒏 = 𝒙𝟐
𝒏
√𝒃 = √𝒙

Example 2: Express (3xy)1/3

𝟏
𝒃𝒏 = (3xy)1/3
𝒏
√𝒃 = √𝟑𝒙𝒚
𝟑

Example 3: Express (2x2y)1/5

𝟏
𝒃𝒏 = (2x2y)1/5
𝒏 𝟓
√𝒃 = √𝟐𝒙𝟐 𝒚

DEFINITION OF 𝒏√(𝒃)𝒎
𝟏
If n and m are positive integers and b is any real number such that 𝒃𝒏 is a real

number, then 𝒃 𝒏 = ( √𝒃)m = √𝒃𝒎 .

Example: Express y3/5 in its radical form.

𝐦
𝒃 𝒏 = y3/5
𝒏
( √𝒃)m = ( 𝟓√𝒚)3
𝒏 𝟓

Example: Express (2xy2)3/7 in its radical form.

𝒏 𝟕
( √𝒃)m = ( √𝟐𝒙𝒚𝟐)3
𝒏 𝟕
√𝒃𝒎 = √𝟐𝟑 𝒙𝟑 𝒚𝟐(𝟑)
𝟕

Example: Express (4a3b2)5/17 in its radical form.

In the same way that we can express rational exponent in its radical form, we can use
the same definition in expressing radical expression to rational exponent:

Example: Express √𝒙𝟑 𝒚𝟓 in its rational exponent form.

𝒏
√𝒃 = √𝒙𝟑 𝒚𝟓
𝟏
𝒃𝒏 = (x3y5)1/2 – Use the properties of rational exponent to simplify.
𝟏
𝒃𝒏 = x3/2y5/2

𝒃𝒏 = (𝟐𝟕𝒂𝟓 𝒃𝟐 )1/3 – use the properties of rational exponent to simplify.
𝟏

𝒃𝒏 = 3𝒂𝟑 𝒃𝟑
𝟓
Example: Express √𝟑𝟏𝟐𝟓𝒂𝟑 𝒃𝟔
𝒏 𝟓
√𝒃 = √𝟑𝟏𝟐𝟓𝒂𝟑 𝒃𝟔
𝟏
𝒃𝒏 = (3125a3b6)1/5 - use the properties of rational exponent to simplify.

𝒃𝒏 = (5●5●5●5●5)1/5a3/5b6/5
𝟏
𝒃𝒏 = 5a3/5b6/5
