1.0 TITLE:
Method statement for 120 minutes Intumescent fire proofing works for steel
structures at project “AL BATEEN EXECUTIVE AIRPORT”.

2.0 SCOPE OF WORKS:

The Scope shall include all labor, material, equipment, permits and services
necessary for the installation of 120 minutes Intumescent fire proofing works for steel
structures in accordance with the drawings, Project specifications, civil defense
requirements and as per the contract documents.

The following are the scope of work to be carried-out by Rise & Shine,

i) Submission of Material submittal.

ii) Procurement of fireproofing materials.

iii) Delivery & installation of fireproofing material.

The responsibility of Rise & Shine is to verify the requirements of this Method
statement, to the extent necessary, are conscientiously observed at all times during
the project period.

2.1 GENERAL DESCRIPTION – FIREPROOFING WORKS

Fireproofing, a passive fire protection measure, refers to the act of making
materials or structures more resistant to fire, or to those materials themselves, or the
act of applying such materials. Applying a certification listed fireproofing system to
certain structures allows these to have a fire-resistance rating. The term fireproof does
not necessarily mean that an item cannot ever burn, it relates to measured
performance under specific conditions of testing and evaluation. Fireproofing does not
allow treated items to be entirely unaffected by any fire, as conventional materials are
not immune to the effects of fire at a sufficient intensity and/or duration.

 Potable water shall be made available at the work location which

will be stored in 200Ltr drums/ barrels.
 Ensure the steel is clean and dry.
 MIR approval shall be obtained prior use of materials.
 This product is a high viscosity product. It is possible that this may be
effected when stored. It should be mixed with an air/electric powered
mechanical paint mixing tool that is clean and fit for purpose.
 Mechanically mix for about 1-2 minutes to ensure that the product is mixed
to a uniform consistency and to fully incorporate all of the ingredients into
a homogenous mixture. Slow speed mixers or mechanical mixers are highly
recommended to ensure no aeration or air bubbles are formed during the
mixing process. Manual mixing is not recommended
 Do not add thinner. The product is ready to use and should not be thinned.
Use Fresh water as cleaning agent.
 The recommended method of application is by heavy-duty airless spray
equipment. A typical wet film thickness (WFT) of not more than 1000 µm
per coat with smaller intervals is highly recommended. If thicker coats are
applied sagging may occur and will also affect the drying and handling time.
 Build up thickness to achieve loading required in several quick passes. It
may be possible to apply two coats of base coat in one day particularly if
the atmospheric temperature is above 20°C and relative humidity below
80%. However, before doing this, ensure that the previously applied coat
is dry, particularly in the web/flange junctions.
 Follow the manufacturers loading chart to determine thickness for each
member.
 Where the specified DFT is greater than 750 µm, apply two or more coats
to build up the total specified DFT. Keep the WFT to a maximum of 1000
µm per coat. Ensure 4 hours’ interval is followed between each coats.
 Drying time and over coating intervals will depend on local environmental
conditions. The over coating time between each coat depends on the total
DFT required to be built up as a system.
 The actual drying time can vary depending on environmental conditions
such as air temperature, relative humidity, weather conditions, ventilation
and also the number of coats, total dry film thickness applied, etc.
 Water ponding must be avoided. Early exposure of Intumescent to
moisture, rainwater, high humidity or condensation will cause defects such
as blistering and/or delamination.

 Once the Intumescent coated surface is dry the DFT shall be checked by
the QC and inspection shall be raised to the contractor/ consultant for
approval. Approved ITP shall be followed.
2.5.4 APPLICATION OF TOP COAT OVER INTUMESCENT
 When the Intumescent Paint required thickness as per Loading Chart is
achieved, inspected and approved, Top Coat will be applied.
 Upon successful inspection a mist coat of Hard Top XP shall be applied. Mist
coat is Hard Top XP thinned up to 50%.
 Apply one full coat of Hard Top XP thinned up to 10% at WFT 100 microns
to achieve a DFT of 50 microns.
 Once the topcoat is dry the QC shall inspect and raise inspection to the
contractor/ consultant for approval as per approved ITP.
