INTRODUCTION

What is IELTS Speaking Test?

This test is designed to assess a wide range of skills. The questions were
not formulated to test how smart you are. The topics don’t require specialized
knowledge. You won’t be asked to explain criminal or civil procedure, legal,
engineering or medical processes. All the examiner would do is to assess your
language level.

It’s not about your opinions or preferences. Your score would not be based
on your character and choices. There are no right or wrong answers. You just need
to justify your opinions with suitable examples and analysis.

In this test, you get to speak at length on given topics. You need to use
appropriate language. You must also organize your ideas in a coherent manner.
You need to demonstrate an ability to communicate your opinions on everyday
topics and common experiences.

What are the parts of the IELTS Speaking Test?

There are three (3) parts and they are as follows:

Part 1:
This consists of questions about you, your family, work and interests. These
are general questions about your life and they were designed to make you
comfortable and prepare you for the other parts of the test.
Part 2:
This is where you speak about a particular topic. The examiner will give
you a task card. You will be instructed to explain or describe a specific topic.
You would also be given points that you need to include in your answer. You will
be given one minute to prepare and one to two minutes to give your answer.
The examiner will stop you after two minutes.

Part 3:
This would involve a longer and more detailed discussion. The questions
could be a follow-up of the topic in part 2 or related to the same. This is where
you need to highlight your abilities. You need to go into details and provide
reasons, concrete examples and reasonable analysis.

How would these books help?

These books will help you familiarize yourself with the common questions
and topics that are included in the IELTS test. Each lesson is divided into the
three parts of IELTS Speaking. You will be trained to be fluent in all parts at the
end of the series. A space is provided in Part 2 of each lesson for you to write
keywords that you would use for your explanation. A mock test is included at
the end of each book to help you get the feel of what it’s like to actually take
the test. Your teacher will guide you every step of your IELTS journey.

Important Note:

Don’t think of it as a test. It’s just a conversation. You will enter a room and
you would sit across a person who wants to know more about you. Don’t put
too much pressure on yourself. Enjoy the process and just express yourself!

PART 1
Instruction: Answer the following questions to introduce yourself.

Topic: Family

1 Describe your family. How many members are there in your family?

Sample Answer:
I came from a big family. I have my mom and dad and four siblings.
Three of us are boys and the other two are girls. Over the years, we all
grew up together with our parents except for my youngest sister who
lives with my grandmother. I love the way our parents brought us up in a
natural environment of simplicity.

2 Tell me the most important lesson that your parents taught you?

Sample answer:
My parents taught me how to be hardworking, forgiving and
passionate. They taught me to be independent. They showed me that
no matter how tough life gets, everything would work out as long as we
have wisdom and passion inside us. They told me that no matter how the
world treats us, we can manage to survive.

3 Describe the things that you do together with your brother and/or
sister. How often do you spend time together?

Sample answer:
My sister and I love shopping. Oftentimes, when we are not busy, we
go out and shop. Since both of us are working, we spend time together
only on weekends. Though we have limited time together, it’s always
worth it.

4 Compare the time you spend with your family when you were young
and now that you’ve grown up.

Sample answer:
When I was young, I could easily spend time with my family since
I lived with my parents, whereas now, we barely spend time together
because we live in two different places. That’s not all. We also have work
and life to consider. We are often busy with our own stuff that it’s almost
impossible to see each other. However, whenever we find a way to work
it out, we make sure to focus on one another.

5 was the most memorable vacation that you had with your family?

Sample answer:
The most memorable vacation that my family and I had was when
we went to the beach with our relatives. It was a memorable time for
me because it was the first time that the whole family got together. I
remember everyone laughing out loud over the smallest of things. The
chatter was non-stop. Nothing else mattered that time except for the
company that we were blessed with.

Sample answer:
Definitely. In our country, family comes first. The respect that we
have for our elders is undeniable. We have lots of traditions and holidays
honoring all members of the family. Communication lines are always
open. Even if we live far apart, we make sure that our bonds remain
strong.

Sample Answer:
A couple of years ago, I went on a holiday to Canada with my parents. Back
then, the first order of business was going to Niagara Falls. It was a dream
come true for the whole family. The wonderful display of nature left us stunned
for hours. Niagara Falls is made up of three different waterfalls. That’s why the
water flow is so strong. I remember that the water created a mist that looked
so magical. I was intrigued and amazed by its beauty. The wonder of nature
could be so powerful at times and I was witnessing it for the first time. My
favorite part was the boat tour called “Maid of the Mist.” We got a really close
view of the falls. It was exciting and scary at the same time. I feel like all people
must go on this adventure at least once in their lives. My mom, dad and I were
completely drenched at the end of the tour. That’s how intense the experience
was. After we calmed down a bit from the tour, we were able to enjoy the
dazzling light show at the falls. It was the perfect end to our day.

What are some of the benefits of travelling?

Sample Answer:
Travelling is considered life-changing by many people. We get
exposed to so many things that we had never known while growing
up. It makes us appreciate people who speak and act in various ways.
Travelling takes us out of our comfort zone and helps us experience
wonders that many people just see in books and movies.

2 Why do most people prefer travelling abroad?

Sample answer:
Most people travel because they want to get away from their daily
lives. They want to go as far as possible in order to experience different
forms of recreation and relaxation. Travelling abroad means that they
could meet new people, try new kinds of food and see new places. These
are all very exciting for most of us.

3 Do you think visiting another country can change the way people think?

Sample answer:
It depends on the person. If people open themselves up to the
experience, they would definitely learn and grow more. If they try new
things and go on adventures, they would definitely become more mature
and open-minded along the way. However, if people refuse to see the
beauty in where they are going, they would just go back to where they
started.

4 Do you think it’s safer to travel now than in the past?

Sample answer:
Travel is so much easier, as well as safer, now than in the past.
First, there are so many technological advancements that have been
invented. Modes of transportation and travel are getting better every day.
Next, we currently have the Internet. We can do research on the places
where we want to go. We wouldn’t get lost anymore through the help
of applications and devices. We can also stay connected with people
from home to let them know of our plans in case of emergencies and
unexpected occurrences.

5 How has tourism in your country developed over the years?

Sample answer:
There are so many changes that elevated tourism into a whole
new level. In our country, infrastructure and transportation have been
improving as years go by. Tourism ambassadors are working overtime
in promoting destinations within the country to foreigners. Bookings are
made easier and rules are more relaxed to encourage tourists to travel
and visit our wonderful country.

Instruction: Answer the following questions to introduce yourself.

Topic: Hometown

1 Where do you live?

Sample Answer:
I live with my parents in the small town of Stars Hollow. To be more
exact, we live in a cozy house near the center of town. I absolutely love
my house. My favorite part is the porch swing where I can read and relax
all day. I also have my own room and I have to admit that I enjoy the
privacy it brings. However, I can’t wait for the day that I can have my own
apartment in the city.

2 What are the main places of interest in your hometown?
Talk about them.

Sample answer:
First, I have to mention the Great River which you will find around the
city. People go on picnics there to enjoy the view while they spend time
with their loved ones. Second, to the northeast of the city lie the most
famous mountains and zoological parks. People visit these places to see
tigers, bears, wolves and even pandas living in their natural environment.
The last thing I want to tell you about are the botanical gardens on the on
the west side. People can visit the site of an emperor’s tomb from the last
dynasty.

3 Can you tell me a little bit about the history of your hometown?

Sample answer:
My hometown was originally called “Home of a Thousand Stars.” It
was occupied by two tribes before some colonizers invaded our country
in the first half of the 19th century. Long before a major earthquake
devastated our place, it was once a town full of impressive medieval
buildings.

4 What is your hometown known for?

Sample answer:
My hometown is famous for its cherry blossoms. Tourists from all
over the world flock in the spring to witness an extraordinary view. The
small and delicate pink flowers lend a magical atmosphere to our place.
The lavish spectacle stays in the memories of people from all over.

Sample answer:
Our town is truly one for the books. It is filled with people with vibrant
personalities. There’s never a dull moment with these people around.
They laugh out loud in diners, on the streets, in markets and sometimes,
even in libraries. Outsiders might think that the people in our town are
eccentric. In a way, that is completely true. I wouldn’t have them any
other way.

6 is the main problem faced by your hometown?

Sample answer:
The biggest challenge in our hometown is the lack of roads and
bridges. There’s only one way to enter and get out of our town. It’s
difficult for businessmen to do business or trade with neighboring towns.
It also doesn’t help tourism at all. Though we have amazing vacation
spots, visitors feel discouraged to come because it’s also a big challenge
for them to reach our place.

I love playing soccer with my friends on weekends. We all gather at the
park either on Saturdays or Sundays. It’s great exercise for all of us and at the
same time, it allows us to spend more quality time with each other. With our
hectic lives, it’s almost impossible to hang out and have fun with our friends.
All of us look forward to the weekend to enjoy the sport and each other’s
company. On my part, playing soccer with my friends has helped me lose
weight and become more active. I often feel stressed because of my job.
Soccer is a healthy activity that helps me have fun and blow off some steam.
There is something really therapeutic about kicking a ball around a wide
field. It really helps me maintain my mental health. It’s also not a bad physical
activity. Playing soccer helps me stretch my muscles and allows me to sweat
out toxins from my body. That’s why I know that I will never grow out of kicking
a soccer ball around with my friends.

How can people maintain good health?

Sample Answer:
There are two factors to consider in maintaining good health. I’m
referring to proper diet and regular exercise. People have to make
sure that they consume the right kind of food and the right amount
of food. They should also eat at the proper time. Regular exercise is
also necessary to stay healthy. We have to keep our bodies strong
and flexible in order to boost our immune system and keep away from
illness.

2 How do elderly people keep fit in your country?

Sample answer:
Elderly people in my country are in love with ballroom dancing. It’s
a chance for them to stay healthy and mingle with their peers. They plan
events and they gather to have fun as well as move their bones and
muscles.

3 Do you think there would be less illness in the future?

Sample answer:
I do believe that. So many things have already happened in the
world. Thousands of diseases have taken so many lives. People have
already learned their lesson and that’s why they are putting health above
anything else. Science is also growing and developing every day. For the
quality of health care and life, there’s nowhere to go but up.

4 Do you think health care should be free?

Sample answer:
Health care should be available for everyone who needs it. It must
never be dependent on social status and wealth. Health care equals life.
Imagine yourself sick, weak and alone. It is always better to have the
peace of mind that you will be taken care of whether you have the means
to pay for medication or not.

5 What makes a good doctor?

Sample answer:
A good doctor is someone who goes far and beyond duty to take
care of his or her patients. Good doctors genuinely care about the people
entrusted in their care. They help people who seek medical help. They
have great bedside manner. They don’t prioritize money over the well-

to be out in the sun and get some exercise.

I play tennis for two to three hours on Saturdays and Sundays. I

That’s why I would like to give cooking a shot. I have never really cooked
for myself, let alone anyone else. However, I’m getting married in five
months so I think it would be better for me to enjoy the activity by then.

4 Who do you like to spend your leisure time with?

Sample answer:
The best person to share my free time with is my older sister. She is
hilarious and she gets me every time. We have the same taste in books
and movies so it’s always good to hang out with her. No matter what
we’re doing, we can always find a way to make things interesting and
enjoyable.

In my country, there is a famous host and comedian named Yoo Jae Suk.
Everyone loves him and I am no exception. He started out small appearing in
low-key television programs and festivals. He got his first big break when he
co-hosted a program with three other talented entertainers. That’s when he
slowly rose to prominence. Nowadays, he maintains his relevance by appearing
in numerous variety shows. People in my country say that if Yoo Jae Suk is
part of a show, it would surely turn out to be a big thing. I found out about this
special man when I started watching the popular variety show, “Running Man.”
In that program, he makes people laugh through his witty comments and funny
facial expressions. There are many things that I admire about Yoo Jae Suk but
the thing I like most about him is his personality. There isn’t a single egotistical
bone in this person’s body. I can see his sincerity and kindness in how he treats
the other members of his shows. He truly cares about the audience and the
quality of work and content that he puts out. He is not only a professional. Yoo
Jae Suk is a true visionary.

Fan clubs are just people coming together because of a common
interest. They can be a source of friendship and good relationships.

Yes, there are a couple of foreign celebrities whom I admire like
Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep. I like them because of their talent. Their

No, I don’t. There are many perks to being a celebrity. However, I
believe that the challenges outweigh the advantages. I can never handle
people prying into my personal business. I also need peace and quiet
most of the time so I would never dream of being recognized wherever I
go. I think a simple life is the way to go.

4 Do you think famous people are still entitled to privacy?

Sample answer:
Yes, they are. There are many challenges for famous people to
separate what they want to show to the public and what they want to
keep to themselves. However, it doesn’t mean that they don’t have the
right to privacy just like everybody else. We often forget that celebrities
are not objects that people can own and abuse. They are people too and
they need to have their privacy respected.

5 Why do people become famous?

Sample answer:
People become famous because they are extraordinary or have
something extraordinary. There are some with beautiful and handsome
faces who rise to stardom because of their looks. There are people who
become well-known because they can do things that others can’t. Many
people are also talked about because of their contributions to the world
and society. Being famous is all about being special.

1 What is your job?

Sample Answer:
I am working as an English teacher in an academy. I spend eight to
ten hours working because I have a lot of paperwork to accomplish. I
have been teaching for three years already and I’m proud to say that
though my job requires almost all of my time and effort, I still enjoy and
love it.

2 Why did you choose that job?

Sample answer:
I chose this job because I knew that it would bring me so much
happiness. My job is a constant source of fulfillment for me. My passion
has always been to impart my knowledge to others and make a
difference in their lives. I’m glad to be where I am today.

3 Tell me about a difficult project at work and how you were able
to handle it.

Sample answer:
I can still remember how hard our last project was. Being the project
manager, I needed to do things simultaneously. It was very challenging
especially the part where I had to deal with difficult people. With the
advice of my seniors though, I was able to finish the project with flying
colors.

4 Do you get on well with your colleagues?

Sample answer:
I must say that I really have a good relationship with my colleagues.
We have mutual respect for each other. I listen to them when they
share their ideas and they also listen to what I have to say. We support
each other and we always do our best to be honest and upfront about
everything. We really work well together and that’s why we were able to
accomplish greats things for the company.

I am in charge of the English curriculum in my school. I prepare
materials for middle school students. I come up with assessment tests

I would never forget my first day at work. Everyone was so welcoming
and helpful. The supervisors gave me everything I needed for the job
and they spent time to answer my questions in detail. My colleagues

and office.

I have a lot of stuff that I have been collecting over time. Today, I will talk
about my favorite bag. It is the Chanel shoulder bag that I bought on my last
trip to Paris. It’s a two-tone bag that is not so commonly seen in stores. It’s a
combination of light brown and black. It’s made of caviar leather which is a
really good material. I have been using and enjoying this bag for two years
now and there’s not even a single scratch on it. I carry this bag whenever I
go out. It goes well with any of my outfits. It has such a classic design that
catches people’s eyes. It’s a unique piece and a great conversation starter.
This bag holds a special place in my heart because it’s my first big purchase
since I started working. Whenever I use the bag, I remember how hard I worked
and saved up for it. The fact that I didn’t get this item so easily makes me
appreciate it more. I know that I will treasure this bag forever because it would
always remind me that hard work brings about great results.

Why do some people collect things?

Sample Answer:
People have different collections depending on their passion. A
person collects a bunch of the same things because they find pleasure
in these items. It’s like accumulating little pieces of happiness that they
want to keep in their homes and by their side. Others collect some items
because it is a way for them to reduce stress while others collect things
because they take pride in having such.

Sample answer:
Some people who are dissatisfied with local products try some
things that come from other countries. They believe that only products

Yes, we do. Just like any other relationship, friendship requires that
we put in the work. We should make time for our friends and show our
appreciation. We have to talk about misunderstandings. We need to

I like it better when I shop alone. I can take my time and not worry
that I’m being an inconvenience to another person. I can also be
spontaneous and just visit shops that come to my head. It’s just easier to
move alone because I don’t have to consider what other people want to
do or where they want to go.

4 Have you ever bought anything online?

Sample answer:
Yes. I bought this rose gold necklace with a pendant. That’s the first
thing I ever bought online. It took me a while to warm up to the idea of
online shopping. I was afraid that I wouldn’t be satisfied with the quality
and appearance of items that I buy when they arrive at my door. However,
after I got that necklace, I became more convinced that online shopping
may not be a bad idea after all.

I don’t really need to do that. It’s because I usually do my research
before I go shopping. I already know what items I’m going to get and
which stores I’m going to get them from. I set aside a part of my budget

I want to talk about the piece of advice that my father gave me in the
beginning of the year. We were talking about how to handle finances and save
up for the future. My father told me to avoid splurging on luxury things and
spending on ridiculous expenses. He also told me that a portion of my monthly
income should immediately go to my savings account. He explained that I’m
still young and that this is the time to hustle and work for my future. According
to my father, expenses would start rolling in when I become older and I need to
be prepared for that. I need to be in a position where I could just pick from my
savings in the future without feeling a heavy burden. I feel that I should have
sought out my father’s advice years ago. However, it’s never too late. I have
taken his words to heart and I know that I would be making wiser decisions
from now on.

Sample answer:
It’s hard for some people to put their two cents in even if others ask
because they feel a responsibility with the words that they speak. They
know that whatever they say can either make or break a person. That’s
why they don’t take this action lightly.

3 What’s the best piece of advice you could give a newly married couple?

Sample answer:
If I could tell newly married couples just one thing, it would be that
marriage isn’t perfect but that’s okay. Getting into marriage, most people
think that they have found the perfect person to be with forever. That is
not the case, though. They would discover that there are so many things
that they don’t agree on. However, that is completely normal. Everyone
just needs to swap their expectations for reality and everything would
just eventually work out.

4 What’s the best piece of advice you can give someone who is trying
to quit smoking?

Sample answer:
I think the best thing I can tell people who are trying to quit
smoking is to make sure they have the will before they quit. All plans and
tips to quit smoking will serve no purpose if a person is not ready to do
just that. People must really want to quit smoking first before they can
work on themselves.

Generally, yes. Women are great listeners. They would listen and
