General
Multiplexed electrical system
Volvo Bus has introduced an integrated multiplexed
electrical system consisting of a number of control units
that define the subsystems and functions in the bus.
The multiplexed electrical system consists of four data
links: bus A, bus B, bus C, and bus D. Bus A controls
functions that are part of the bus drive line, bus B handles
body functions, bus C handles chassis functions and
bus D is a communication link between bus C and bus
B. Besides the chassis control unit (CECM-C), bus C
also includes a number of modules that communicate
through a CAN data link according to the VOLCANO
standard (a unique Volvo CAN link) - the same applies to
bus B but with the difference that it is then a CECM-B. T3016118
The chassis control unit and the other control units (bus
A)communicate with each other through two common
data links, SAE J1587/J1708 and SAE J1939. This
exchange of information via data links makes the system
flexible and modular.
Each module is positioned so that the distance to the
components it communicates with is as short as possible.
This makes it possible to reduce cable lengths between
modules and the components they control and monitor.

Advanced Information Centre (AIC)

The AIC is a control unit that can be ordered as an
optional extra. It controls and monitors the body functions.
The control unit carries out different functions using
information coming directly from the sensors that are
connected to the control unit and also signals obtained
from the other control units through data links. In a
corresponding way, the AIC sends some of its available
information on the common data links so that it is available
for the other control units.

The AIC controls and monitors functions such as the T3017025

climate unit, parking heater and lights as well as presents

information on faults.

Advanced Information Centre 2 (AIC 2)

AIC 2 is located in the driver environment. It differs in
appearance from it predecessor.

AIC 2 is operated using the following keypad: T3017432

Starting AIC
Information is read into the control unit when AIC is
started. The system runs through the software and
displays the corresponding text on the screen. The
following image is also displayed:

The following happens:

1 Shown when the operating system starts.
2 Shown when the system is configured. In AIC 2, a
column is displayed in combination with this symbol
to indicate how far the system has advanced in its
configuration.
3 Displayed when the applications are being
decompressed and started.

Total time consumption for starting:

• AIC: 60 — 120 sec

• AIC 2: 30 — 45 sec

Design
The AIC is not only a unit showing and controlling the
functionality of the bus, it is also used as a troubleshooting
tool. The connector pins on the control unit have different
electrical characteristics and in case of a fault, the user
can read the signal levels and the type of fault.
The AIC is connected to its own communication link, the
D bus, where it communicates with CECM-B as well as
CECM-C. For a more detailed explanation of the different
data buses, please refer to “Multiplexed electrical system”
page 2 .

Function
The functionality of the AIC can be likened with the control
lever in BIC. Moving around the different menus is done
by pressing different buttons and confirming by pressing
“Enter”. “Esc” is used to exit from a menu.

The first menu shown in the AIC window provides the

user with information concerning the vehicle. There is
one screen that shows the user the menus that can be
selected, e.g. settings, climate or diagnosis.

Malfunction
MID 221 AIC, fault tracing
The method of fault tracing on the AIC differs to the one
used on other control units. The AIC does not have any
fault codes like the ones in other control units and a fault
tracing procedure must be followed instead. No contact
with the AIC can have two causes but to find out which
one of them is at fault, there is more information available
on the Master ID web site.
1 Screen completely black. In this case the AIC is not
receiving any power. Check to see whether the control
unit connector is loose or damaged in any other way. If
this is not the case, use the breakout box to measure
the inputs on the AIC. Check voltage and resistance
readings, see tables.
2 Changes on the AIC such as menu choices, new
parameters, etc., are not shown. This happens when
the AIC loses contact with the D-bus. Check to see
whether the connector is loose or damaged in any
other way. In this is not the case, check the readings
on the D-bus connections, refer to the tables.

If none of the above is any help, try downloading new

software for the AIC from the Volvo central system. For
more information, see:

Service information

• Group 36, Reading diagnosis

Impact

• Group 36, Description, Reading Diagnosis

Note: If there is still no contact after taking these

measures, the control unit is probably defective and must
be replaced.

Handling the software fuse

A software fuse arises when an input/output has an
excessively high output current. The software fuse will
then trigger to protect the components of the function.
The measure to take for this is to read the affected
module from the AIC display. Then find the module and
unplug the connector to cut its power supply - provided
the current to the rest of the bus has been turned off. Plug
in the connector again, turn on the power and the fault
should have disappeared.

Measurement at the control unit

Check measurements at the control unit are made by
connecting measurement box 9998699 and 999 9134
to the control unit connector. Voltage and resistance
measurements can therefore be made directly on the
control unit pins.

Voltage measuring at the control unit

• The breakout box should be connected to the control
unit using the connector, see picture.

• The starter switch should be in position (II).
