Engineering Calculation Sheet Calculation No 006
This calculation was conducted in order to verify Reinhold-Spiri formula as a slip crushing load (FZ) based on axisymmetric
wedge that generates axisymmetric radial load on pipe lateral surface. As the wedge slip bite on pipe, pipe shall be
exposed to radial load. By using Lame equation for a thick wall cylinders, the axial and hoop stress on pipe ID can be
estimated from radial stress acting on pipe OD. since radial stress as a function of axial load, the axial load at which
VME stress at pipe ID reaches stress to cause pipe yielding can be determined.
Nomenclature
OD Pipe outer diameter
ID Pipe inner diameter
A1 Pipe cross section area
AL Pipe lateral surface area around slip bite
Sy Pipe yield material based on grade
FA Pipe axial load
FR Pipe radial load
L Slip length
α Slip angle
µ Friction coefficient
Sa Axial stress
Sr (o/i) Radial stress (outer / inner)
Sh Hoop stress
K Tranverse factor from axial stress (Sa) to radial stress (Sr)
FZ Slip crushing load
Let
Sro = (K A1 / AL) Sa _ _ _ see page 2 for transverse factor derivation
From Lame equation for thick wall cylinder (Sri = 0 as radial stress on pipe ID vanish)
Sh = [(OD2 + ID2) / (OD2 - ID2)]Sri - [2OD2 / (OD2 - ID2)]Sro _ _ _ [1]
2 2 2
= - [2OD / (OD - ID )]Sro
2 2 2
= - [2OD / (OD - ID )][(K A1 / AL)Sa]
Fz = (Sy . A1) {2 / [1 + [[2OD2 / (OD2 - ID2)](K A1 / AL)]2 + ([1 + 2OD2 / (OD2 - ID2)][(K A1 / AL))2]}0.5
since
A1 = π/4 (OD2 - ID2)
AL = π OD L
Fz = (Sy . A1) {2 / [1 + [[2OD2 / (OD2 - ID2)](K A1 / AL)]2 + ([1 + 2OD2 / (OD2 - ID2)][(K A1 / AL))2]}0.5
= (Sy . A1) {2 / [1 + [K OD / 2L)]2 + ([1 + (K OD / 2L))2]}0.5 _ _ _ [2]

FR = R1.cos α - μ.R1.sin α
= R1.(cos α - μ.sin α)
R1 = FR / (cos α - μ.sin α)
FA = R1.sin α + (μ.R1).cos α
= R1.(sin α + μ.cos α)
= [FR / (cos α - μ.sin α)] (sin α + μ.cos α)
= FR [(sin α + μ.cos α) / (cos α - μ.sin α)]
= FR / cot (α+θ) _ _ _ [4] page 157
FR = FA . cot (α+θ) ___ cot (α+θ) known as transverse factor
FR = FA . K from pipe axial load to radial load [2]
Then
Sro . AL = K. Sa . A1
Sro = (K A1 / AL) Sa
