ABSTRACT

 Search and Rescue Robots are used for a myriad of tasks in the 21st century. They
are designed to do particular tasks that humans can but will not do, or even things
humans cannot do. Our objective is to design and construct a robot to be used in
an emergency response mission that will be able to venture into terrain and
environments that are other wise too dangerous for human responders.
 The main function of the Rescue Robot is to detect survivors using real time video
transmission and send robot location via Bluetooth GPS receiver mounted on
robot. The video camera will also be connected to PC wirelessly for real time
video transmitting. The GPS will also send location data to PC and it will have the
location where rescuers are to be sent. The robot is controlled by Microcontroller
and will be driven via looking at real-time video feedback received on PC.
 The Mechanical Engineers designed the actual platform for the robot to travel.
The robot has a track system similar to army, so that it can traverse rough terrain.
This required an independent suspension system on each wheel. The suspension
system was constructed using the loading as parameters for designing it. The axle
system will be cut out and the braking system will be attached. Finally a motor
with the appropriate torque and speed was selected based on previous weight
parameters and it will be attached to the robot.

INTRODUCTION

 The idea of search and Rescue Robots emerged at the beginning of the 1980s.
Nevertheless, until the 1990s there weren't any real development in this field.
Although robots are not widely used in actual search and rescue situations at the
moment the development in this field seems quite promising. The benefits of
rescue robots to these operations include reduced personnel requirements, reduced
fatigue, and access to unreachable areas.
 Disasters can disturb economic and social equilibrium of the civilization. Because
of high upsurge constructions and other manmade structures urban and industrial
areas are considered to be more susceptible to disasters. These disasters can be
characterized into natural and human induced disasters. Natural disasters contain
floods, storms, tornadoes, bush fire, earthquakes etc whereas human induced
disasters include transportation accidents, industrial accidents, major fires etc.
 In most of the disasters and natural calamities the rescue teams faced many
problems in searching peoples which were in concern .Although, it was a very
problematic task for them in searching the victims .so the rescue robots were
invented it helped the rescue teams during 11th September 2001. It was first
developed & used for searching victim and survivals after the terrorist attack on
11sept2001 in NEW YORK. The beneficial of the project is to reduce fatigue and
to access unreachable areas.
 Robotics application is used for the search and rescue since robot can be deployed
in dangerous environment without putting human at risk. In this project we are
making the use of PIR sensor (as a human detector) Wireless communication (as a
wireless camera, RF module, GPS, GSM), Microcontroller (LPC-2148). Robot is
controlled by using RF technology. We are making the use of wireless camera
with voice transmission. RF module of Transmitter and Receiver both operate at
same frequency of 433 MHZ

WORKING

 A rescue robot is a robot that has been designed for the purpose of rescuing
people.Common situations that employ rescue robots are mining accidents, urban
disasters, hostage situations, and explosions. Rescue robots in development are being
made with abilities such as searching, reconnaissance and mapping, removing or shoring
up rubble, delivery of supplies, medical treatment, and evacuation of casualties. Even
with all these ideas coming about there are still some technical challenges that remain.
 A visual system for the robot
Human victim detection Hazardous material signs detection Easy to use interface for
controlling the robot Intelligent graphical user interface that highlights only important
information to the operator
 Needs & Ways Of Detection Of Humans
 Computer Vision - The computer vision system, to be used to detect the various
symbols such as the hazmat signs, will be developed by taking an input stream of video
from the robots on-board cameras. Human Robot Interface - The Graphical User
Interface (GUI), through which the robot operator will be given information from the
robots on-board instruments, such as its cameras, will be developed in an Object Oriented
Programming language such as C++
 Robot Control Interface - The robotic control interface will send all commands to the
robot via TCP/IP socket messages passed over the wireless network, where the primary
control system on the robot will interpret these messages and forward them to their
respective sub-systems on the robot.

 Aerial Rescue Robots Aerial robots are designed and made for saving humanlives. The
first purpose of building the robot is the relief of people drowning near coastlines. By
developing its applications, it can be used in ships and off shore reliefs. It can also be
used in other applications such asmonitoring of marine and off shore structures,
recording films and pictures from dangerouspath ways for rescue missions,
precisepositioning and monitoring of off shore disastersand aid in firefighting.

 Fire Fighting Robots It is a robot that autonomously detect and extinguish fire.It use
flame sensor for detection and arduino board for processing.Fire extinguisher along with
electronic valve( actuator) is used to extinguish the detected fire. The robot rotates while
actively scanning for fire. This scanning is performed by sensors placed on the
sides. When a fire is detected, it moves in the direction of fire an stops 30 cm in front of it
and trigger the extinguisher to turn out the fire.
Marine Rescue Robots Marine rescue robots are underwater vehicles which are playing
an increasing role in undrwater rescuing and commercial offshore oil and gas operations

like oil and gas exploration, subsea work, repairs and maintenance, and inspections.
Existing technologies have been improved to strengthen resilience, and new
developments include marine robotic vehicles that can deploy autonomous life saving
capsules, using mission planning software, new sensors and new data acquisition
capabilities to detect and track survivors.
 Medical Robots A medical robot is a robot that allows surgeons greater access to
areas under operation using more precise and less invasive methods. They are in most
telemanipulators, which use the surgeon's actions on one side to control the "effector" on
the other side.
 Military Robots Military robots are autonomous robots or remote- controlled devices
designed for military applications. The use of robots in warfare, although traditionally a
topic for science fiction, is being researched as a possible future means of fighting wars.
Already several military robots have been developed by various armies.
 Snake Robots A snake rbot is a biomorphic hyper- redundant robot that resembles a
snake. Snake robots come in all shapes and sizes The small cross section to length ratio
allows snake robots to move into, and maneuver through, tight spaces. Their ability to
change the shape of their body allows them to perform a wide range of behaviours, such
as climbing stairs or tree trunks.

 Hurricanes, mudslides, earthquakes and terror attacks often leave widespread damage
and those injured can often be very hard to reach for search and rescue teams. Robots can
play a vital role in getting life-saving aid to those in need. Robots help because they are
small enough to enter confined spaces, or they can fly above damaged areas cut off from
road transport, which allows rescuers isolated from the scene to find those in most urgent
need of attention. The benefits of rescue robots to these operations include reduced
personnel requirements, reduced fatigue, and access to otherwise unreachable areas.

CONCLUSION

The design process of a rescue robot is explained in this paper. Each aspect for detecting
the human in a disaster environment considering a fire accident is explained clearly.
The design process covers the communication system and the sensors for detecting the
object in a hazard environment.
The brief description of the sensor type and the metal body to protect the robot from the
heavy fire and smoke is given in the literature survey. The robot designed is aimed to
work efficiently and effectively in such severe environments.
An efficient wireless communication system is specified in this paper. Mobile Ad-Hoc
Networking algorithm has been used that provides a well routed message transmission
protocols, which is an important task that locates the human (Victims) and conveys the
information
Regarding the location along with the path that is been traced on an indicator and finally
reaches the source station i.e. the main control unit.
