OG1 Lesson Presentation

The document provides teachings on obeying God and becoming a disciple of Jesus Christ. It discusses how disciples must have transformed hearts, minds, desires, and wills. The heart and mind must be spiritually renewed and focused on studying God's word. Desires should be centered around what Jesus loves, such as justice, mercy, and faithfulness. The will must be freed from sin and committed to obeying God. Becoming a fully devoted disciple requires radical transformation in these areas of one's being.

John 14:23-24
Jesus replied, “Anyone who loves me will obey my
teaching. My Father will love them, and we will
come to them and make our home with them.
Anyone who does not love me will not obey my
teaching. These words you hear are not my own;
they belong to the Father who sent me.

HABITS - OBEYING GOD

John 15:19-24
“As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now
remain in my love. If you keep my commands, you will
remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s
commands and remain in his love. I have told you this so
that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be
complete. My command is this: Love each other as I have
loved you. Greater love has no one that this: to lay down
one’s life for one’s friends. You are my friends if you do
what I command.

Luke 9:57-62
57As they were walking along the road, a man said to him, “I will
follow you wherever you go.” 58 Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens
and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his
head.” 59He said to another man, “Follow me.” But he replied,
“Lord, first let me go and bury my father.” 60 Jesus said to him, “Let
the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the
kingdom of God.” 61 Still another said, “I will follow you, Lord; but
first let me go back and say goodbye to my family.” 62 Jesus replied,
“No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for
service in the kingdom of God.”

TRANSFORMED DESIRE AND WILL
Psalm 42:1–2

As a deer pants for flowing streams, so my soul pants for

you, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When
shall I come and appear before God?

John 14:15

If you love me, you will keep my commandments.

HABITS - OBEYING GOD
TRANSFORMED DESIRES
A disciple of Jesus learns to love what Jesus loves and to hate what
Jesus hates.

• Jesus practices justice, mercy, and faithfulness, so should His

disciples. (Matthew 23:23)
“Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you
hypocrites! You give a tenth of your spices—mint, dill and
cumin. But you have neglected the more important matters of
the law—justice, mercy and faithfulness. You should have
practiced the latter, without neglecting the former.”
HABITS - OBEYING GOD
TRANSFORMED DESIRES
A disciple of Jesus learns to love what Jesus loves and to hate what
Jesus hates.

• Jesus showed His love for His people, His neighbor, and His
enemies, an example that His disciple must follow. (Luke
6:27-36)

“But to you who are listening I say: Love your enemies, do

good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray
for those who mistreat you.”
HABITS - OBEYING GOD
TRANSFORMED DESIRES
A disciple of Jesus learns to love what Jesus loves and to hate what
Jesus hates.

• Jesus, as God, hates pagan worship, wickedness, arrogance,

lying, and violence. Disciples of Jesus Christ must turn away
from these, and should hate these too. (Deuteronomy 12:29-
31)
“You must not worship the Lord your God in their way,
because in worshiping their gods, they do all kinds of
detestable things the Lord hates.”
HABITS - OBEYING GOD
TRANSFORMED DESIRES

Philippians 3:7-14

DESIRES CHECK

Do we desire what God desires?

HABITS - OBEYING GOD

TRANSFORMED WILL
Romans 6:1-4

What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may

increase? 2 By no means! We are those who have died to sin; how
can we live in it any longer? 3 Or don’t you know that all of us who
were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We
were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in
order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the
glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.

HABITS - OBEYING GOD

TRANSFORMED WILL
Romans 6:5-7

5 Forif we have been united with him in a death like his, we will
certainly also be united with him in a resurrection like his. 6 For we
know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body ruled
by sin might be done away with,[a] that we should no longer be
slaves to sin— 7 because anyone who has died has been set free
from sin.

HABITS - OBEYING GOD

TRANSFORMED WILL
Romans 6:8-11

8 Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with
him. 9 For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead, he
cannot die again; death no longer has mastery over him. 10 The
death he died, he died to sin once for all; but the life he lives, he
lives to God.
11 In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in

Christ Jesus.

RELATIONSHIPS AND PURPOSE

HABITS - OBEYING GOD

TRANSFORMED RELATIONSHIPS AND
PURPOSE
John 13:35
By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have
love for one another.

2 Corinthians 5:14-15
For the love of Christ controls, us, because we have concluded this:
that one died for all, therefore, all have died; and he died for all,
that those who live might no longer live for themselves but for him
who for their sake died and was raised.

HABITS - OBEYING GOD

TRANSFORMED RELATIONSHIPS
1. Love that rules out any form of hurt or injury to
another person.

Romans 13:10
Love does no harm to a neighbor. Therefore love is the
fulfillment of the law

HABITS - OBEYING GOD

TRANSFORMED RELATIONSHIPS
2. Love means that we do good to other people.

John 13:34
A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have
loved you, so you must love one another.

e.g. The Good Samaritan – Luke 10:25-37

HABITS - OBEYING GOD

TRANSFORMED RELATIONSHIPS
3. Love our Enemies

Luke 6:35
35 But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to

them without expecting to get anything back. Then your

reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most
High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked. 36 Be
merciful, just as your Father is merciful.

1 Corinthians 10:31-33

So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all

for the glory of God. Do not cause anyone to stumble,
whether Jews, Greeks or the church of God — even as I try
to please everyone in every way. For I am not seeking my
own good but the good of many, so that they may be saved.

HABITS - OBEYING GOD

TRANSFORMED PURPOSE
2 Corinthians 5:14

14For Christ’s love compels us, because we are convinced

that one died for all, and therefore all died.

We are all part of the Great Commission and
