codes, MORT&H specifications and normal practice adopted in the country for design and
construction of bridges.
A Design Loading:
The design loading for the bridge has been considered in accordance with IRC: 6 (Loads and Stresses)
so as to sustain the most critical combination of various loads, forces and stress that can coexist.

B Dead Load:
The dead to as of various members of the bridge for the design of superstructure, substructure and
foundation have been adopted as per the relevant IRC codes and Indian Standards.
Sr. No. Material Unit weight KN/m3

One lane of Class A considered to occupy 2.3 m.The remaining width of carriageway shall be loaded
with 500.00 Kg/Sqm
E Longitudinal Forces:
Following effect is considered in the design:
a Breaking forces as per the provision of Cl.214 of IRC: 6. -2000
Distribution of longitudinal forces due to horizontal deformation of bearings/ frictional resistance
b

F Horizontal Forces due to water currents:
Portion of bridge which may be submerged in running water is designed to sustain safely the
horizontal pressure due to force of current as per the stipulations of Cl.213 of IRC: 6-2000
G Earth Pressure Forces:
Earth pressure forces are calculated as per the provision of Clause 217 of IRC: 6 assuming the following
soil properties:
Type of soil assumed for backfilling: As per Appendix 6 of IRC: 78 with dry density of 18 KN/m3 and
submerged density of 20 KN/m3.

Angle of Internal Friction : Ø : 300

Angle of Wall Friction : Ø : 200
Coefficient of Friction : 0.5

Where Ø is the base angle of internal friction of substrata under the foundations. Live load surcharge is
considered as per the provisions of Clause 217.1 of IRC: 6 i.e. equivalent of 1.2m height of earth fill in
case of abutments and equivalent of 1.2m height of earth fill in case of return/wing walls.

H Seismic Effect:
As per Clause 222 IRC: 6-2000
Proposed Bridge is Seismic zones IV
I Temperature Effect:
The bridge structure / components i.e. bearings and expansion joints are designed for a temperature
variation of + 250 C considering moderate climate condition.
J Load Combination:
All members were designed to sustain safely the most critical combination of various loads and forces
that can coexist. Various load combinations as relevant with increase in permissible stresses are
considered in the design as per Clause 202 of IRC: 6-2000 and Clause 706 of IRC: 78.

The concrete parts are designed by working stress method. In addition, the stability of bridge resting
on tarpaper bearings is checked under on span dislodged condition. The load case relates to
seismic/wind load combinations.

1.4 Material Specification:

Grade of concrete in various elements shall be as under for moderate conditions of exposure:
All RCC members

1.5 Codes & Specifications:

The standard specifications and codes of practice for road bridge of IRC wherever applicable are
followed. The following codes have been generally followed.
IRC Standard Specifications and Code of practice for Road Bridges

IRC: 5-1998 - General features of Design

IRC: 6- 2000 - Loads and Stresses

1.8 Analysis and Design of Superstructure

The alluvial type of stream with presence of hard strata at a depth of @ 1.50 m open type of foundation
is proposed. Providing RCC T beam & deck slab, and abutment type of structure is suited for the
situation.
The span arrangement of 1X25 of 25m is proposed for RCC T-beam Bridge.Based on loads mentioned
earlier , bending moments and shear forces are worked out at selected sections. Sections are than
designed as RCC concrete section subjected to the applied moments and shear forces.

Design moments, shear forces and joint displacements are worked out using Staad Pro 2007, based on
which structural design of various elements and checking of adequacy of different section is done.

1.       Computation Of Loads On Superstructure

i)   Dead Load (Self weight of deck slab)
The density of concrete adopted for evaluating the dead load is as follows;
Deck slab - 24KN/m3
ii) Superimposed Dead Load (SIDL)
The effect of SIDL is considered on the grillage. The UDL due to crash barrier load & due to wearing
coat is applied on the slab. The density of wearing coat considered is 22 KN/m3.
iii) Vehicular Live Loads
One lane of Class A considered to occupy 2.3 m.The remaining width of carriageway shall be loaded
with 500.00 Kg/Sqm
The deck slab is designed for all dead loads and live loads with impact and designed for bending
moment per unit width of the slab.

1.9 STRUCTURAL SYSTEM

The span arrangement consists of 1X25m centers to center of the abutment. The proposed bridge is a
two-lane bridge. A clear carriageway width of 4.5 m for single lanes without footpath an outer to
outer width of 5.5 m. A cross fall of 2.5% on the carriageway is provided for proper drainage.

i)      Superstructure
RCC girder with the deck slab. The overall depth of the RCC girder is 2.4m depth.
ii)     Substructure and Foundation
Open foundations are proposed for the bridge. The depth of the foundation shall be minimum 1.5m
below the rock line level subject to confirmation of soil investigation report. The Safe Bearing Capacity
at the founding level is taken as 300 KN/sq.m. The minimum embedment of foundation in the rock
shall be as per IRC.
iii)    Bearings
Elastomeric bearings are proposed.
iv)     Expansion Joint
Elastomeric slab seal joints are proposed for bridges with RCC T beam superstructures. These types of
joints shall conform to Clause 1207.2.5 of MORT&H Specification for Road & Bridge Works
(4thRevision).

v)      Drainage Spout
