COVID-19 impacts on school sports events: an alternative through E-sports

According to Dilson José de Quadros Martins, (2021), COVID-19 impacts on school sports
events: an alternative through E-sports, The COVID-19 pandemic has affected many areas of
society, including sports. Measuring the impact of the ongoing pandemic is a complex task
given the early stages of government action and research addressing its impact on sports. With
that in mind, this commentary aims to explore how COVID-19 has affected school physical
education policies. To this end, we analyze how the government of Paraná, Brazil, has
responded to the impact of the pandemic on school sports policies and identify what solutions
have been outlined.
Professional sports have been able to implement complex and stringent safety protocols, but
these are not economically viable for academic and non-commercial multisport competitions.
School sports competitions have been severely impacted and found to be unable to resume due
to inconsistencies and difficulties in implementing safety protocols appropriate to this new
scenario. It was the development of immediate remote alternatives (esports competitions) that
could influence the reconfiguration of the sports system. It sheds light on the measures
outlined for this, in particular the eSports initiative by the State Government of Paraná.
