Q1 Do you think that the third level was only
an escape for Charley ? Why ? Or
How is the Grand Central Station a symbol
of escape ?
Ans. Yes, | think the third level was a
medium of escape for Charley. He was
living with the fear, worries, stress and
insecurity of modern life. He wished to live
in a peaceful world that existed long before.
So, an imagination of the third level cropped
up in his mind. He found this to be a place
that existed much before the two world
wars. He thought of buying tickets from
there to a place of the past. He thought of
living there away from the hue and cry of
the modern world.
Q2 What do you infer from Sam's letter to
Charley ?
Ans. Charley found a letter from Sam,
his psychiatrist friend among his
collection of first day covers. He had
never seen before it but now it suddenly
appeared. In the letter, Sam had
informed Charley that he was living in
Galesburg, on the third level.
OnePlus NotesClearly, the letter was a product of Charley's
imagination. It was his another
waking-dream wish fulfilment. Sam's letter
also reflects that like Charley, Sam too
wanted to escape from this world of sad
realities.
Q3 ‘The modern world is full of insecurity,
fear, war, worry and stress.’ What are the
ways in which we attempt to overcome
them?
Ans.We are living in a world that is full of
insecurity, fear, wars, worries and stress.
These conditions make us uneasy. So, we
try to overcome them by escaping from
reality. We try to escape to imaginary past
because we believe that the past was free
from insecurity, fear and worries. We adopt
hobbies such as stamp collection, watching
comic shows, playing with children etc.
Being busy with our hobbies, we get some
relief from the harsh realities of the world.
OnePlus NotesQ4 Do you see an intersection of time and
space in the story?
Ans.The story "The Third Level’ constantly
lingers between the past and the present.
The past is about a place named Galesburg
and the present tells about New York. The
narrator lives in New York among the
modern insecurity and fear.
He finds the third level at the Grand Central
Station, a place of 1894. We constantly
keep on moving from New York to
Galesburg and from modernity to the old
world. Thus, there is obviously an
intersection of time and space in the story.
Q5 What does the third level refer to?
Ans.The third level at the Grand Central
Station of New York does not really exist.
There are only two levels at the station. The
third level is a product of Charley's
imagination. He finds it as a place where he
can escape from the modern world of
insecurity and fear.
OnePlus NotesQ6 How did Charley's psychiatrist friend
explain his reaching the third level?
Ans.Charley’'s friend explained that the
modern world is full of insecurity, fear, wars
and worries etc. Owing to all this, Charley
was depressed. So the imagination of the
third level rose in his mind.
Q7 Why do the people in the modern world
want to escape ?
Ans.The modern world is full of insecurity,
fear, wars and worries. So, the people want
to escape from it.
Q8 Why could Charley never again find the
third level ?
Ans. He could never again find the place as
it was a mere product of his imagination.
The place did not really exist.
OnePlus NotesQ9 What is a first-day cover ?
Ans.When a new stamp is issued, the
stamp collectors buy some of them. They
people use them to mail envelopes to
themselves on the first day of the sale. The
envelope is called a first-day cover.
Q10 How was the Grand Central Station
growing like a tree ?
Ans. It had a criss-cross of tunnels. The
narrator whenever went there, he bumped
into new doorways and stairs and corridors.
So, he felt that it was growing like a tree.
Q10 How was Charley's reaching the third
level a waking-dream wish fulfilment?
Ans.Charley's reaching the third level was a
waking-dream wish fulfilment. This third
level was a place of the peaceful past. Here,
he could buy tickets to Galesburg, where he
had passed his childhood. So, Charley felt
very good about that. He thought of living a
simple and romantic life as the people did
in the past. The thought was quite soothing
to him.
OnePlus NotesDescribe the scene at the third level. Or
What time did the third level indicate and
how ? Or
Describe briefly the scene at the third level
of Grand Central Station as seen by Charley.
Ans. At the third level of the Grand Central
Station, Charley witnessed an atmosphere
of the remote past. The information booth
was of old style. It was made of wood. The
man in the booth wore a green eyeshade
and long black sleeve protectors. There
were open flame gaslights. There were
brass spittoons on the floor. People wore
the look of eighteen-ninety-something. They
had beards, sideburns and fancy
moustaches.
