This study aims to determine the effectiveness of a reading intervention called Project READ on improving the reading comprehension of Grade 9 students in Ipil National High School, Philippines. The study will administer pre-and post-tests to measure reading comprehension before and after the intervention. It hypothesizes that the results of the post-test for students in the intervention group will show significantly improved reading comprehension compared to the control group.

TITLE: Enrichment of Grade 9 Apitong’s Learners Reading Comprehension through Project

READ (Read Everyday and Discover)

B. BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY:

Reading comprehension is an essential skill for learners of English, for most of learners it is the most

important skill to master to ensure success in learning. This research aimed to explain the learner's

reading comprehension of Grade 9 Apitong by using project READ (read everyday and discover) as

an intervention in enriching the learner's reading comprehension. The data will be collected by doing

observation, conducting interview, distributing questionaire, and giving reading test (pre-test and

post-test) to the students. This will be conducted among the Grade 9 Apitong's students in Ipil

National High School located at Purok Corazon, Ipil Heights, Ipil Zamboanga Sibugay.

A study conducted by Marquez (2018) declared that, comprehension is that the major purpose of

reading; without comprehension, reading may be a mindless activity notwithstanding age or ability of

the reader. Based on the study, the researchers conclude that to get information in reading, students

need comprehension and that students cannot get the meaning of the text if the text is not

comprehended by them. Reading for general comprehension is a skill that involves absorbing the

content of the text. As the reader, we are not looking for specific points only, but rather than it, we

need to get an overall understanding of the text. Problem mostly occurs to the students when reading

book, sometimes students were facing a book but do not read at all.

The goal of this study is to determine the result of the effectivity of the Word

D. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM:

This study aims to determine the reading comprehension ability of Grade 9 Apitong’s students.

Hence, this study intends to answer the following specific questions:

1. Before conducting an intervention, what is the reading comprehension ability of the controlled

and uncontrolled groups as determined by a pre-test?

2. Before conducting an intervention, what is the reading comprehension ability of the controlled

and uncontrolled groups as determined by a post-test?

3. Is there any significance difference between the results of the pre-test and post-test?

E. RESEARCH OBJECTIVES:

1. To determine the result of reading comprehension ability of Grade 9 Apitong’s students in

controlled and uncontrolled group by pre-test.

2. To determine the result of reading comprehension ability of Grade 9 Apitong’s students in

controlled and uncontrolled group by post-test.

3. To determine the effectiveness of project READ (read everyday and discover) to the Grade 9

Apitong’s students.

F. STATEMENT OF HYPOTHESES:

1. Ha: There is a significance difference between the result of the pre-test and post-test of the

reading comprehension ability of controlled and uncontrolled group of Grade 9 Apitong’s

students.
2. Ho: There is no significance difference between the result of the pre-test and post-test of the
