1 INTRODUCTION:
This report has been prepared upon the request of sinoma chengdu design & research
institute of building materials industry co. ltd to Misr Raymond Foundations in order to
carry out the engineering services for the site investigation and geotechnical
recommendations for EGYPTIAN CEMENT FACTORY (PHASE 1) – Ancillary
buildings. A site investigation program was implemented by MISR RAYMOND and A&A
(The Consultant) using in house capabilities as well as other specialized soil investigation
contractors.
This report is prepared in order to document the geotechnical activities and to present the
results of the analysis as well as the recommendations for foundation design.

4.1 General:
A site investigation program has been carried out in order to provide adequate
information on the subsurface conditions at the site. The site investigations were
conducted by the specialized soil investigation firm (GeoDrill) under the
supervision of Misr Raymond Geotechnical Engineer during September 2017.
The site investigation program comprises mechanical boreholes, field tests and
laboratory tests. Boreholes, field and laboratory tests results are included in the
factual report enclosed in Appendix 1.
4.2 Boreholes
Eleven (11) Mechanical boreholes were carried out to depth ranging from 10.00m to
20.00m below the existing ground level. The coordinates of the boreholes shown in
table (4.1). The drilled boreholes were four inches in diameter. Appendix No 1
includes the boreholes logs drawn to a suitable scale. On each borehole log the
following data are given:
1- Borehole number.
2- Total depth of the borehole.
3- Date of execution.
4- Type of borehole (Rotary Air Drilling).
5- Depths and description (classification) of the layers.
6- Type of sampling (standard spilt spoon and coring).
7- Results of field tests.
The soil samples were taken as follows:
1- For the non-cohesive layers, the samples were taken using standard spilt spoon at
selected depths.
2- All samples collected from boreholes were examined, described and classified by
Misr Raymond geotechnical engineer and taken to MRF laboratory for testing.
3- Ground water table in the drilled boreholes was measured during borings and 24
hours after completion of all boreholes.
4- Ground water table in the drilled boreholes was not encountered during the
execution of the drilling activities.

5 SUBSURFACE CONDITIONS
These relations shall be discussed in this section in brief as most of them are given
in textbooks, as well as in the NAVFAC DM. 7.1. In addition, the Egyptian code of
design and construction for foundation has been used for data not included in
NAVFAC. These relations shall be used for estimating the soil parameters needed in
the design and geotechnical analysis.
6.1.1 Relation Between Nb Values And Relative Density Dr For Non-Cohesive Soil
According to the ECP, Part 3, the relation between the number of blows in SPT and
the relative density is given as in Table (7.1)
Table 6.1: Relation between relative density and No. of blows in S.P.T test
Number of blows in SPT Description Relative Density RD %
0–4 Very Loose 0 – 15%
5-10 Loose 15% - 35%
10 – 30 Medium 35% - 65%
30 – 50 Dense 65% - 85%
> 50 Very Dense > 85%
6.1.2 Relation Between Relative Density Dr And The Angle Of Internal Friction
For Non-Cohesive Soil
According to the ECP, Part 3, the relation between the relative density and the angle
of internal friction is given as in Table 7.2.
Table 6.2 - Relation between relative density and angle of internal friction
Relative Density RD % Angle of internal friction (degree)
0 – 15% 27 – 30
15% - 35% 30 – 32
35% - 65% 32 – 36
65% - 85% 36 – 40
> 85% > 40
6.1.4 Relation Between Bulk Unit Weight And Nb For Non-Cohesive Soils
According to Bowels design handbook, the relation between the unit weight and the
Nb values is given in Table 7.3.
6.2.1 Relation between Rock quality designation (RQD) and Rock Classification
The rocks can be classified according to the unconfined compressive strength according to
the Egyptian code as follows:
Table 6.4 - Rock Classification According To Rock Quality DESIGNATION (R.Q.D)
Rock Quality (R.Q.D ) %
Very Weak Less Than 25
Weak 25 - 50
Medium 50 - 75
Good 75 - 90
Excellent 90 - 100
6.2.4 Relation between Point load index results and rock classification
According to the Egyptian Code of Foundations Part II - Table (2-31-1) - The relationship
between the point load index and the rock classification is given in the following table:
7.2.2 Gradation
7.3.2 Gradation
8 GEOTECHNICAL ANALYSIS
Referring to the anticipated loads and geotechnical condition of the site, shallow
foundation system is considered the most appropriate foundation system. The
shallow foundation system shall be raft footings foundation connected by ground
beams.
8.3 Relation between the foundation level and the existing ground level
Geological cross sections had been created based on results of the drilled boreholes.
This profile is attached in Appendix (2). Figures (8.1) to (8.6) shows the foundation
level plotted on these geological cross sections.
Based on these profiles, it is clear that the foundation level shall be rested on LIMESTONE
layer for all the buildings under study.
This means cutting (excavation through rock layer) shall be needed in order to reach
the foundation level.
Where:
qult = ultimate bearing capacity (KN/m2)
c = cohesion (KN/m2)
q = effective surcharge; (KN/m2)
= 1 Df where Df refers to depth of footing
1 = unit weight of subsoil above foundation level (KN/m3)
2 = unit weight of subsoil below foundation level (KN/m3)
B = width (diameter) of footing (m)
Df = The depth of the base of footing (m)
Nc, Nq, N = bearing capacity factors dependent only on the angle of
shearing resistance of the soil.
c, q, = shape factors
8.7.1 General
The settlement of the foundation had been evaluated at different stresses at the
proposed foundation level. As previously explained, the allowable settlement of the
foundations shall be considered as 50 mm while the angle of tilt shall be ranging
within (1:300 to 1:750). The main aim of the settlement calculations is to compute
the net stresses at the foundation level which, shall result in total settlement of
50mm. In addition, the angle of tilt shall be checked considering that the differential
settlement is half the total settlement. The value of the net stresses that satisfies the
settlement requirements shall be compared to the value of the net stress satisfies the
bearing capacity requirements and the minimum value shall be considered the safe
allowable stresses at the foundation level.
9 RECOMMENDATIONS
2- The foundation level for each building shall be as follows: (considering finished
levels of the project)
3- For all Buildings, the foundation type shall be plain concrete footing/raft overlaid by
reinforced concrete footing/raft.
4- The thickness of the plain concrete footings/raft shall be chosen by the designer
considering economic aspects of the foundation, In case that the chosen thickness of
the plain concrete is less than 300 mm, the plain concrete shall be considered as
non-structural elements.
5- The allowable net bearing capacity at the recommended foundation level shall be as
per the following table :
6- Minimum width for strip/isolated footings shall be not less than 1.00m.
7- The site preparation guidelines shall be applied prior to the construction of
foundations according to item 9.2.
8- For all buildings with isolated footings, the footings shall be connected with rigid
beams in both directions at their bottom level.
9- For the fence (part 2 – between BH(137) to BH(141)) the footings shall be connected
with rigid beams.
10- For the fence, a complete construction joints shall be considered at maximum
spacing of 16.00 m.
11- In case it is required to perform an elastic analysis for any foundation elements (during the
design phase), the following model may be adopted: Winkler model with the following
modulus of sub grade reaction :
12- For case of non-uniform stress, the area subjected to compression shall be not less than
75% of the foundation area.
13- The allowable net bearing capacity can be raised by 25% for case of wind loading and
33% for case of earthquake loading.

Dr / Mohamed Abdel Hamid
