Box Culvert New

This document provides design details for a 10m long by 3m wide box culvert with various wall thicknesses. It calculates loads on the structure from dead loads, live loads, and soil pressure. Bending moments are determined for three cases: 1) when the top slab carries all loads and the culvert is empty, 2) when the top slab carries loads and the culvert is full, and 3) when the sides do not carry live loads and the culvert is full. The maximum bending moment of 66kNm occurs for cases 1 and 2 and requires 2124mm^2 of steel reinforcement. Case 3 has a maximum bending moment of 45kNm, requiring 1131mm^2 of steel.

Design of Box culvert

Data

Length 10 m c/c = 10.3

Breadth 3m c/c = 3.3
Thickness of bottom slab 0.4 m 400 mm
Thickness of top slab 0.3 m 300 mm
Thickness of wall 0.3 m 300 mm
Height 1.8 m 1800 mm
Super Imposed D.L 12 kN/m²
Live Load on Culvert 50 kN/m²
Soil Capacity 18 kN/m²
Angle of repose 30 degree

Loads

Weight of Top slab 10 kN/m²

Super Imposed D.L 12 kN/m²
Live Load on Culvert 50 kN/m²
Total Load 72 kN/m²

Weight of two Vertical Walls 27 kN/m²

Consider 1 m run of the culvert,

Pressure intensity on the base slab 87 kN/m²

Note : Weight of the bottom slab will be directly counteracted

by the coresponding ground reaction. At any depth 'h' from top,

Lateral pressure intensity (p) = ( D.L + L.L )*(1-sin30)/ + ( Soil capacity * height (h)) * (1-sin30)/
(1+sin30) (1+sin30)
At height h = 0
Lateral pressure intensity (p) 20.46 kN/m²

At height h = 1.8 m
Lateral pressure intensity (p) 31.152 kN/m²

Case 1 : When the top of the slab carries the dead load and the live load
and the culvert is empty.

Fixed End Moments

Considering each member as a separate fixed member, Fixed end
moments are as follows :

Mab = w x l² / 12
Mab -54 kNm
Mbc 54 kNm
Mcd -65.25 kNm
Mdc 65.25 kNm
Mda 20.156 (-) kNm
Mda 18.552 kNm

Bending Moment Calculation

Maximum B.M for AB = Wl²/8

Maximum B.M for AB 81 kNm
Maximum Bending moment near water surface
( Moment distribution method ) 35.2 kNm
Net B.M at centre of AB 45.8 kNm

Maximum B.M for CD = Wl²/8

Maximum B.M for CD 97.875 kNm
Maximum Bending moment near water surface
( Moment distribution method ) 45 kNm
Net B.M at centre of AB 52.875 kNm
Maximum Bending moment at mid span of top and bottom slabs
( producing tension near the water face ) = 66 kNm
Case 2 : When the top slab carries the dead load and the live load and the
culvert is full of water.

Maximum Bending moment at mid span of top and bottom slabs

( producing tension near the water face ) = 66 kNm

Maximum Bending moment near water surface

( Moment distribution method ) = 41 kNm

Case 3 : When the sides of the culvert do not carry the live load and
the culvert is full.

Maximum Bending moment at mid span of top and bottom slabs

( producing tension near the water face ) = 66 kNm

Maximum Bending moment near water surface

( Moment distribution method ) = 35 kNm

Hence, From all the above cases, the case that has Maximum B.M is
adopted for design purpose.

Reinforcements ( slab and side walls )

Maximum Bending moment at mid span of top and bottom slabs

( producing tension near the water face ) = 66 kNm

Area of steel (Ast) = 2124 mm²

Maximum Bending moment near water surface

( Moment distribution method ) = 45 kNm

Area of steel (Ast) = 1131 mm²

Provide 20 mm dia bars @ 125 mm c/c as main reinforcement.

Provide 16 mm dia bars @ 125 mm c/c as distribution reinforcement.
