Projectile Motion

Projectile motion can be analyzed by separating the motion into horizontal and vertical components. The horizontal component follows uniform motion, while the vertical component follows uniformly accelerated motion under the influence of gravity. A projectile's maximum range is achieved when launched at an angle of 45 degrees. Both the range and time of flight of a projectile depend on its initial velocity and launch angle.

RESOLUTION OF VECTORS

 A single vector is usually divided into

two vectors that are perpendicular to each
other. These two vectors are called
components.
 The process of splitting the vectors into its
components is called resolution.
RESOLUTION OF VECTORS
 The components are usually along the
x- and y-axes of the Cartesian
coordinate system.
 Horizontal component – component
along x-axis
 Vertical component – component
along y-axis

ftl
The launch force keeps on acting on the object after
it was thrown.

ftl
The projectile maintains its motion due to the
acquired launch force.

ftl
At the top of the projectile’s flight, there is still gravity
that’s why projectiles start to fall.

ftl
A fielder throws a softball to a baseman. Which diagram
below shows the force(s) acting on the ball while it is on air
if Fg represents the force of gravity, and Fh refers to the
throwing force?

ftl
Projectile motion can be separated into components.

a. Roll a ball along a horizontal surface, and its velocity is

constant because no component of gravitational force
acts horizontally.

ftl
b. Drop it, and it accelerates
downward and covers a
greater vertical distance
each second.

ftl
The horizontal
component is in
UNIFORM MOTION.
The vertical
component is in

ACCELERATED
MOTION or FREE FALL.

ftl
Law of Compound Motions
The horizontal component of motion for
a projectile is completely independent
of the vertical component of motion.

Their combined effects produce the

variety of curved paths that projectiles
follow.

simultaneously–one
ball drops freely
while the other one
is projected
horizontally.

Think!
At the instant a horizontally pointed cannon is
fired, a cannonball held at the cannon’s side is
released and drops to the ground. Which
cannonball strikes the ground first, the one fired
from the cannon or the one dropped?

Think!
At the instant a horizontally pointed cannon is
fired, a cannonball held at the cannon’s side is
released and drops to the ground. Which
cannonball strikes the ground first, the one fired
from the cannon or the one dropped?

Answer: Both cannonballs fall the same vertical

distance with the same acceleration g and
therefore strike the ground at the same time.

Three Cases of Projectile Motion

ftl
Projectile Launched at an Angle
Neglecting air resistance, the vertical component of
the projectile changes while the horizontal
component does not.

ftl
Projectile Launched at an Angle

ftl
RANGE
The angle at which the projectile is launched affects
the distance that it travels.

ftl
RANGE
The same range is obtained for two different
projection angles—angles that add up to 90°.

ftl
RANGE
Maximum range is usually attained at an angle of
45°.

ftl
TIME of FLIGHT
The higher the angle the projectile is launch, the
longer the time of flight.

ftl
SPEED
Without air resistance,
the speed lost while the
cannonball is going up
equals the speed gained
while it is coming down.

The time to go up equals

the time to come down.

of the rock will the tiger

Sample Problem 3:

In the last five seconds of a basketball game, the

scores of both teams are tied at 82. A player from
one team shoots from a distance of 4.5 m away from
the basket from a height of 2.0 meters at a velocity
of 12 m/s at 40° with the horizontal. Does he miss
or shoot into the basket? The basket is 3.05 m above
the floor.
For the player to score, the ball must travel a horizontal distance of 4.5
m and a vertical distance of 3.05 m – 2.0 m = 1.05 m from the point of
release.
Solve for the initial horizontal and vertical velocity.

Compute for time for the ball to travel 4.5 m.

Then, compute for time for the ball to travel 4.5 m.

Solve the vertical distance using the time t = 0.49 s
