LANGUAGE FEATURES

Language features of Recount text.

As you know before, Recount text is a text that tells the reader about one
story, action or activity. Its goal is to entertaining or informing the reader.
Basically Recount text is the text that tell about experiences or events that a
person has experienced in the past. That means The language features of
recount text is use ‘simple past tense’ (we, went, I saw, we visited, etc.)

The Language features of Recount text using the ‘Adverb’. So, let’s learn about
the Adverb first.

1. Adverb.
Adverb is a ‘word’ that describes or gives more information about a
verb, adjective, adverb, or phrase.Adverb can modify complate
sentence. However, its main purpose is to modify a verb, another
adverb, or an adjective.

EX:
 In the sentence ‘she ran quickly’, the adverb ‘quickly’ modifies
the verb ‘ran’,
 In the sentence ‘she smiled cheerfully’, the word ‘cheerfully’ is
adverb
 In the sentence ‘ he waithed right outside the door’ which word
that is an adverb?
In English, adverbs are usually formed by adding 'ly' to the end of an
adjective. These are some examples for you,
- I thought the movie ended abruptly.
- The beautifully painted landscape is a wonderful addition to
my living room decor.
- Grandma's crystal vase is a priceless antique that must be
handled delicately.
- Her outfit showcased her delightfully quirky personality.
- The teacher firmly disciplined the students for their
misbehavior.
- She lightly dusted the brownies with a layer of powdered sugar
before serving.
- She truthfully answered the police officer's questions.
- Quickly finish the grocery shopping so we can get to the party
in time.
- At the end of a long day, she wearily headed to bed.
- I sent my son to bed early for willfully refusing to eat his
vegetables.

2. Conjunction
Conjunction is a word that connects or joins clauses, words, phrases
together in a sentence. Conjunctions are used to coordinate words in a
sentence. “but”, “although”, “while” are some common conjunctions

- Conjunction joining words:


1. He bought a book and a pen.
2. She ate an apple and a mango.
3. I forgot to bring my laptop and camera.

- Conjunction joining phrases


I. You can met me at my house or at my office.
II. He always sits in the classroom or in the library

- Conjunction joining clauses:


1. I waited for him, but he did not come.
2. You cannot succeed unless you work sincerely.
3. We saw a man in the street who was crying.
4. I sent him an email, but he did not respond.
5. She laughed and entered the room.
- Conjunction joining sentences:
1. I went to a market where I saw a joker.
2. I saw him while I was driving my car.
3. He studies biology because he want to become a doctor.

A sentences can have more than one conjunction. The conjunction can
either be a single word or a group of word known as compound
conjunction. Ex of single word conjunction: but, and, because, yet,
unless, etc. ex of compound conjunction: as long as, as well as, in order
to, even if, so that,etc.

3. Pronoun
Pronouns are words that are substituted for nouns or noun
phrases. It is employed to prevent the noun from being repeated.
Pronouns must match the number and gender of the noun. Examples
of pronouns: she, he, it, they, them, etc.

Look at the sentences below:

• Radhika is in her room. She might be sleeping now.


(Here the highlighted word is a pronoun used in place of the noun
Radhika.)

• Shyama is absent today because Shyama is ill.


(The above sentence can be rewritten as- Shyama is absent today
because she is ill. To avoid repeating the use of the Noun Shyama, we
have used a Pronoun she in its place.)
Types of Pronouns:
There are different types of pronouns. Let’s analyze each
one in further depth one at a time.
- Personal Pronouns
Instead of a name, these pronouns are applied. They are used
for the person speaking, for the person spoken to and for the
person spoken of.
Personal Pronouns are used for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd persons:

Examples of Personal pronouns as a subject-
For example:
 Rohan and I are going on a vacation and we are going by bus.
 You haven’t completed your work yet.
 Kartik, Aryan and Ranjan work in the same company. They have started
working here together.
 My friend has a dog and it is very cute.
 He was punished for his misdeeds, and he knew it.
 Neha says that she remembers you.
4. Adjective
Adjectives, words used to describe or explain nouns and pronouns.
Example: Thom is very smart.
The word smart is adjective. Because the word smart describes a
noun. that is, Thom.
Here are the types of adjectives:

1. Possessive Adjective
Possessive adjective is an adjective word that describes the
possession of a noun or pronoun. Words that include possessive
adjective are my, your, his, her, its, our, their, and whose.
Example sentence: Your flower is beautiful

2. Descriptive Adjective
Descriptive adjective is an adjective that describes the condition of
the described noun. Its function is to describe existing nouns,
descriptive adjectives can also be used on all types of nouns, be it
singular, or plural.
This descriptive adjective is placed before the noun to be described.
- Character = friendly, kind, angry, honest, wise, humble
- Quality = expensive, delicious, cheap, famous, unique
- Size = big, small, long, tall, fat, slim, thin
- Age = young, old, new, ancient, antique
- Temperature = hot, warm, cold, fresh, dry, wet
- Shape = square, circular, triangular, round
- Colour = white, red, yellow, blue, black

Example sentence :
o He’s wearing grey pants.
o I have an antique watch.

3. Quantitative Adjective
Quantitative adjective is what describes the number of objects. Some
of the words used in the adjective quantitave are: a little, a few, few,
any, several, some, a lot of, many, much, plenty of, a great many, etc.
Example sentence :
o She needs a little sugar.
o I have some problem.
o He doesn’t drink much coffee.

4. Demonstratitve Adjective
Demonstrative adjective is a word used to denote the specific
position of a noun or pronoun. The most frequently used words are
this, that, these, and those.
This and these refer to an object or person who is close to existence.
Meanwhile, that and those refer to an object or someone who is far
away from existence.
This and that are used to describe singular nouns. Meanwhile, these
and those are used for plural nouns.
Example sentence :
o I found this book in the library.
o That girl is my classmate.
o He used these products.
o Those shoes are no longer fit for my feet.
5. Interrogative Adjective
Interrogative adjective is used to ask about a thing related to a noun
or pronoun. The words of the interrogative adjective are what,
which, and whose.
Example sentences:
What color of the bag do you like?

5. Noun.
A noun is a part of speech that names a person, place, thing,
idea, action, or quality. But choosing the correct noun can
sometimes be trickier than it seems. Take a look at several
noun examples to learn more about writing and
communicating clearly.

The main types of nouns are proper nouns and common nouns.


Proper nouns are always capitalized and refer to the individual name of
a person, place or thing. Common nouns don’t usually refer to a specific
person, and are only capitalized when they appear at the beginning of a
sentence.

The examples of nouns are respect, faith, apple, seashore, peanut,


motorcycle.

EX:
o I live in Australia.
o Jenny is my sister.
o I love to play with my dog.
o The name of this monkey is Boo.
Pacific Ocean is very vast.

6. Action verb.
An action verb is a verb that expresses something that a person,
animal, object, or process in nature (such as a storm) can do rather than
expressing a state of being. What exactly does this mean? Let’s look at this
example:
 Andre plays rugby.
In this sentence, the verb plays expresses an action that Andre does: Andre
physically plays the sport of rugby. That is why plays is an action verb.

The examples of action verb word are (Act, Agree, Arrive, Ask, Bake, Bring,
Build, Buy, Call, Climb)

EX:
o He plays badminton every Sunday morning.
o They are playing badminton at the stadium.
o Sunflowers grow fast.
o The athlete jumps when his coach blows the whistle
o The athlete is jumping on the trampoline
- Anthony is throwing the football.
- She accepted the job offer
That is all about language features of recount text. Now, let’s do some
