Assignment - Statistics Method

The document describes two statistical inference problems for single samples: 1) A test is conducted to see if the mean tree planting time differs from the estimated time of 2 hours. The sample mean is calculated to be 2.2 hours and sample standard deviation is 0.516 hours. With a significance level of 0.05, the null hypothesis that the mean is equal to 2 hours is not rejected. 2) A test is conducted to see if the mean weight of newborn babies differs from the hypothesized value of 15 pounds. The sample mean is calculated to be 14.14 pounds. With a significance level of 0.05 and using a two-tailed test, the null hypothesis that the mean is equal to 15

Tugas Mandiri 6 (Statistical Inference for a Single Sample)

1. Public Joan’s Nursery specializes in custom-designed landscaping for residential areas. The
estimated labor cost associated with a particular landscaping proposal is based on the
number of plantings of trees, shrubs, and so on to be used for the project. For cost-
estimating purposes, managers use two hours of labor time for the planting of a medium-
sized tree. Actual times from a sample of 10 plantings during the past month follow (times
in hours).

a. With a .05 level of significance, test to see whether the mean tree-planting time
differs from two hours.
b. State the null and alternative hypotheses.
c. Compute the sample mean.
d. Compute the sample standard deviation.
e. What is your conclusion?
Answer :
From the given infromation :

1.7 1.5 2.6 2.2 2.4 2.3 2.6 3.0 1.4 2.3

Find the mean and standard deviation of the given data.

1.7+1.5+…+1.4 +2.3
Mean ( x ) =
10
22
=
10
= 2.2

2 2 2
(1.7−2.2) +(1. 5−2.2) +…+(2.3−2.2)
Standard deviation (s) =
10−1
= √−0.267
= 0.516
Null hypothesis, H0 : μ = 2
Alternative hypothesis, H1 : μ ≠ 2
Level of significance, a = 0.05
x−μ
Test statistic is, t = s

Find the degrees of freedom.
df = n -1
= 10 – 1
=9
Find the p-value.
P-value = (=TDIST(1.23,9,2)) (use excel)
= 0.249878
Since, the p-value is greater than the given significance level 0.05, so we fail to reject the null
hypothesis and conclude that the mean tree-planting time is equal two hours

2.

a. Compute the value of the test statistic.

b. At α = 0.05, what is your conclusion?
c. What is the rejection rule using the critical value? What is your conclusion?
Answer :
The hypothesis are
Null hypothesis, H0 : μ = 18
Alternative hypothesis, H1 : μ ≠ 18
α = 0.05
we can calculate the standard error of mean as
σ 3
σ= = = 0.4243
√ n √ 50
From the null hypothesis, the hypothesized value of mean is μ.H0 = 18
a) The test statistic is
x−μ . H 0 14.14−15
Z= = =−2.00
σ 0.4243
B) The p-value is P(Z>2.00)+P(Z<-2.00)
Using the standard normal tables we get for P(Z<2.0)=0.5+0.4772=0.9772
P(Z>2.00) = 1-P(Z<2.00) = 1-0.9772=0.0228
Since P(Z<-2.00) = P(Z>2.00), we get the p-value as p-value = 0.0228+0.0228 = 0.0456
We will reject the null hypothesis if the p-value is less than the significance level a = 0.05.
Here the p-value is less than a = 0.05. hence we will reject the nullhypothesis. We will
conclude that there is sufficient evidence to support the claim the true mean is not equal
to 15.
c ) This is a 2 tailed test. The critical value fora = 0.05 is obtained by
P(Z> za/2) = a/2 = 0.05/2 = 0.025
This is same as
P(Z< za/2) = 1 – 0.025 = 0.975
From the standard normal tables we get for z 1.96 P(z<1.96) = 0.975.
We will reject the null hypothesis if the test statistic is either less than -1.96 orgreater than
+1.96.
Here the test statistic is -2.00 hence we will reject the null hypothesis.
