Tutorial 5

• Work through your homework problems listed in the self study activities of Lecture Units 2.1,
2.2 and 2.3 in the study guide.

• Complete the problems on the worksheets for Lecture Units 2.1, 2.2 and 2.3 which were
discussed in the lectures.

Complete the online worksheet on clickUP. You can prepare for the submission by work-
ing beforehand through the questions below and consult the tutor team with problems that you
encounter. When you open the tutorial worksheet on clickUP, you will get a unique set of values
for the variables in your questions. You have 24 hours to complete the online tutorial (1 attempt
only). Please read through the “clickUP Evaluation” section in the study guide (pages 50 – 53)
and ensure you comply with all the instructions.

Remember to click “Submit” after you type in every answer; your answers will only be
finalised when you click “End Exam”. The system will not complete the submission
on your behalf.

Question 1
C

Refer to Hibbeler (edition 14) Problem 4.14 page 139. d F

The connected bar BC is used to increase the lever
mm
arm of the crescent wrench as shown. If a clockwise 300
moment of MA = 120 N m is needed to tighten the B
nut at A and the extension d = 300 mm, determine
the required force F in order to develop this moment.
A

1.1 Calculate the magnitude of force F by finding the moment arm D (6= d) of F about A and
using MA = F D.

1.2 Determine the magnitude of force F by applying Varignon’s theorem.

Question 2

2.1 Define the cross product between two vectors in terms of geometric properties of the vectors.

2.2 Define the cross product between two vectors in terms of cartesian vectors.

2.3 Define the moment of a force about a point in terms of the force magnitude and moment
arm. You must also describe the direction of the moment (rotation direction).

Question 3

Question 4
Consider the three moments M 1 , M 2 and M 3 with moment axes through the point A = (1, 0, 0) m,
expressed in terms of the given right handed system of axes

y i M 2 = − 700j + 600k N m
j
M 3 = 1.2k kN m

NOTE the orientation of the positive axes and assure yourself of the fact that this is a right-handed
system of axis.

4.1 Depict the moments on the given system of axes. Use the double arrow representation.

4.2 Determine the resultant M R of the moments and depict the resultant on the same system of
axes.

4.3 Determine the smallest angle between M 2 and M R and indicate this angle on your sketch

5.1 Determine the y−coordinate and z−coordinate of point P .

5.2 Determine the perpendicular distance d from the line of action of F to the origin O. Use the
fact that MO = F d.

5.3 Describe the moment axis of the moment of F about O in words.
