Experimental Procedure For Guided Experiment

The document provides procedures for three guided experiments on flow measurement, major losses in pipes, and minor losses in pipes. The experiments involve connecting manometers and flow measurement devices to pipes to take readings at various flow rates and calculate pressure losses.

EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE FOR GUIDED EXPERIMENT

EXPERIMENT 1: FLOW MEASUREMENT

i Make sure Orifice or Nozzle are fix (Venturi meter is permanently fixed).
ii Switch on the main switch and the pump.
iii Open the outlet gate valve slowly unAl 1200 l/h to remove any air bubble in the system
iv Slowly close gate valve unAl 150 l/h
v Connect manometer tube to inlet (H1) & Outlet (H2) of selected device
vi Slowly, open the control outlet valve slowly unAl level of manometer in H1 reach
maximum and H2 at minimum level. Take the reading at manometer.
vii Record the volume water collected at the tank with the Ame for actual flow rate, Q.
viii ARer finished, set rotameter back to 150 l/h and take out the manometer tube from
the device
ix Connect manometer tube to venturi. Repeat step vi to viii.
x Once finished, to change to orifice or nozzle device, take out manometer tube at 150
l/h and fully closed gate valve then switch off the pump.
xi Change to orifice or nozzle then repeat from step ii unAl viii.
xii Fully close the outlet valve and switch off the pump.
xiii Switch off main switch (at the back).

If Bubble in system/manometer full:

• Install all (6) manometer tube to any fixed device.
• Open gate valve to 1200 l/h.
• Open black cap & close back aRer all bubble remove from system.
• Close gate valve & switch off pump.
• Slowly open white cap to 80mm ~ 90mm then close.
• Switch on pump.
• Slightly open gate valve to 150 l/h.
• Remove manometer tube from device
EXPERIMENT 2: MAJOR LOSES IN PIPE

i Connect both the feeding and return hose to the tested pipe secAon
ii Connect tube to the inlet (H1) and outlet (H2) pipe secAon and to the manometer.
iii Switch on pump and open the control (rotameter) valve slowly unAl maximum level
(2.0 m3/h) to remove air in the pipe system.
iv Slowly open the black cap valve on top of the manometer to release all bubble in the
system then close the black valve.
v Close the gate valve – no flow (0 m3/h).
vi Slowly open the white valve unAl 25 (Galvanized steel & PVC 16) or 1 (Copper, PVC 20
& PVC 32).
vii. Open the control (rotameter) valve slowly unAl level of water in H1 reach maximum
and manometer H2 at minimum level and record the values for maximum reading.
viii. Reduce the flow by closing valve to take the next reading for five (5) different reading.
ix. Then, transfer manometer tube to the differenAal pressure sensor (grey box) to take
reading for differenAal pressure at the digital display screen 1.
x. If there is bubble in the tube, open control valve to 2.0 m3/h and open the grey cap at
the box to overflow the water and close it aRer there is no bubble in the system.
xi. Adjust the flow back as previous record.
xii. ARer finished, take out all the connected tube then close the control valve and switch
off the pump, before changing the feeding and return hose to another secAon pipe.
xiii. Repeat as previous steps.
xiv. Once finished, Take out all the connected tube from the system and fully closed control
valve.
xv. Switch off the pump and main switch
EXPERIMENT 3: MINOR LOSES IN PIPE

i Determine the direction of water inflow and outflow through the pipe.
ii Open the inlet valves of selected pipe section (in parallel with the pipes).
iii Switch on the pump
iv Slowly open the control valve (turn counter-clockwise) until maximum, and wait
for a while in order to remove any air bubble in the flowing pipe.
v Identify which inlet flowing pressure (H1) and outlet flowing pressure (H2) and
connect the manometer tube.
vi Record the values of H1 and H2 in millimeter (mm) of the inlet and the outlet of
water manometer.
vii Record the volume water collected at the tank with the time for measurement of
the flow rate (Q) of water,
viii Determine five (5) suitable flow rates Q by adjusting the outlet valve.
ix After finish, take out the manometer tube first to avoid the bubble in the tube.
x Open the inlet related valve for the next pipe and closed any valve which re not
related to the water flow.
xi Repeat the steps v until ix.
xii Once finished, Take out all the connected tube from the system and fully closed
control valve.
xiii Switch off the pump and main switch

If Bubble in system/manometer full:

• Connect manometer tube to any pipe section.
• Fully open inlet & outlet valve of the pipe
• Open vent valve at the top & let all the air bubble out from system.
• Once done, close the vent valve.
• Close both outlet and inlet valve of the pipe then turn off main switch.
• To setting zero position of manometer - open vent valve at the top (2 rotation)
• Slowly open both of drain valve, then let the water at the center of manometer
scale then close and also close vent valve.
• Turn on Main switch.
