Halima Saadia and Abu Talib
Halima Saadia and Abu Talib
Halima Sadia belonged to the tribe of Banu Saad who were famous for their
purest dialect of the Arabic language. It was a tradition among the ancient Arabs
to send their babies to desert tribes for healthy growth and to learn Arabic
mannerisms. Halima, like many others, was a wet nurse. She came to Makkah
and ended up taking care of the infant Muhammad whom no one else wanted as
he was an orphan and the family couldn’t pay well. However, Muhammad’s
presence brought great blessings to Halima’s life. The mule that she rode while
coming to Makkah was the weakest but became the fastest on the journey back to
Banu Saad. Her animals would go out grazing and will always return the full
stomach and provide plenty of milk. Moreover, Halima and her family developed
a close bond with Muhammad and requested to keep him with them even when
the weaning period was over. So Muhammad stayed with the family for nearly 5
years. Once Muhammad was playing with his foster brothers and sisters when
angel Jibrael came and put Muhammad on the ground. He cut open his chest and
took out his heart. He removed a black clot from his heart and then washed it
with zam zam and placed the heart back in place. This incident terrified Halima
and she returned Muhammad to his family. However, the Prophet kept in contact
with her when he grew up. He used to visit her and when she came to visit him,
he would get up for her in respect. He would spread his cloak for her to sit on and
even send her gifts. The Holy Prophet once said, “Verily I am the most perfect
Arab among you; my descent is from the Quraish and my dialect is that of
the Banu Saad”. When Halima’s daughter Shayma was taken as captive after the
battle of Taif, the Holy Prophet not only freed her but also gave her lots of gifts. She later
embraced Islam.
Abu Talib was Holy Prophet’s uncle. He started taking care of Holy Prophet when he
was only 8 years old. Abu Talib was extremely poor but the love of Muhammad
surpassed everything and Abu Talib raised him with love and affection. It was under
Abu Talib’s care that Muhammad experienced the first business trip to Syria and
learned trade skills from his uncle. In Syria, Abu Talib was warned by a Monk to take his
nephew back as he is the final messenger of God so Abu Talib returned with Muhammad
to Makkah. After the Prophet accepted Islam, Abu Talib stood like a rock against his
enemies and supported his nephew through thick and thin. Once when the Quraysh
pressurized him to hand over Muhammad and Abu Talib urged his nephew to consider
their offers. The Holy Prophet said, “By God, if they put the sun in my right hand
and the moon in my left on condition that I abandon this course, until God has
made me victorious, or I perish therein, I would not abandon it."
Abu Talib even faced persecution when he and his people retreated to the Valley of Abu
Talib for three years as they refused to lift their support for Muhammad. Even though he
died a non-Muslim, Abu Talib never ceased to stand up for his nephew.
