1. Total capacitance decreases in series but increases in parallel. Total inductance increases in series but decreases in parallel. 2. To obtain higher inductance, inductors should be connected in series rather than parallel as inductance increases with more inductors added in series. 3. For a time of 10 seconds and resistance of 100,000 ohms, an inductance of 1,000,000 mH is needed.

1. Compare the total capacitance and total inductance in series.

1 1 1 1
The total capacitance in series can be found using the equation; = + +…+
t C1 C 2 Cn
. The total capacitance decreases as the number of capacitors increases. For total inductance in
series it increases as the number of inductors increases given by the equation; Lt = L1 + L2 + ...
+Ln.

2. If you need higher inductance, what circuit you must use- series or parallel. Explain your answer.

To obtain a greater inductance, it is more effective to connect inductors in a series

configuration rather than in parallel. Connecting inductors in parallel causes a reduction in their
total inductance, while connecting them in series results in an increase in their total inductance.
The reason for this is that each inductor in the series has the same current flowing through it,
and their magnetic fields combine to produce a larger total magnetic field.

3. If the time you need is 10 seconds and the resistance is 100,000 ohms, how much inductance in
mH is needed?

Given:
T = 10s
R = 100,000Ω

Find:
L in mH

Solution:
The inductance required for a given time and resistance can be solved using the formula
for the time constant of an RL circuit:
L
T= ; L=TR
R
L = (10s)( 100,000Ω)
= 1,000,000H
L = 1,000,000H x 1,000
L = 1,000,000,000 mH

4. If the inductance is 250 mH and the resistance is 1000 ohms, how long will it take to induce a
voltage of 86 volts if the circuit is connected to a 100 volts supply.

Given:
L = 250mH
R = 1000Ω
Vi = 86V
Vs = 100V

Find:
t

Solution:
L

T = 0.00025s

5. Using an ohmmeter, how do you check if the inductor is working properly?

In order to verify the proper functioning of an inductor using an ohmmeter, it is

necessary to measure its resistance. This involves turning off the power, disconnecting the
inductor, setting the ohmmeter, testing the inductor, comparing the reading to the
manufacturer's specifications, and interpreting the results. If the reading falls within the
specified range and matches the manufacturer's specifications, it can be concluded that the
inductor is functioning correctly.

6. Show how two SPDT switches can be wired to turn ON and OFF a light from two different
locations. The voltage source is a 12-V battery.
7. Which would you expect to have more resistance, a 1000-ft length of No. 23 gage copper wire or
a 100-ft length of No. 23 gage copper wire?

The resistance of a wire is directly proportional to its length and inversely proportional
to its cross-sectional area. This means that the longer the wire and the narrower its cross-
sectional area, the greater its resistance. Therefore, the 1000 ft wire will have a higher
resistance compared to the 100 ft wire as it is longer. Electrons need to travel a longer distance
through the longer wire, resulting in more resistance.

8. If an extension cord is made up of 65 strands of No. 28 gage copper wire, what is its equivalent
gage size in solid wire?

Given:
No. 28 gage copper wire
D = 12.64 mils
A = 159.8cmils
No. of strands = 65

Find:
Diameter in solid wire

Solution:
AT = NA
= (65)(159.8cmils)
AT = 10,387 cmils
