In 1977 the prestigious Ewha Women‘s University 1. Which of the following best summarizes the
in Seoul, Korea, announced the opening of the first content of the passage?
women‘s studies program in Asia. Few academic A. A critique of a particular women‘s studies program
programs have ever received such public attention. In B. A report of work in social theory done by a
broadcast debates, critics dismissed the program as a particular women‘s studies program
betrayal of national identity, an imitation of Western C. An assessment of the strengths and weaknesses of

that had already proved useful in Asian culture, akin to programs

founders of the program, however, realized that 2. It can be inferred from the passage that the
neither view was correct. They had some reservations broadcast media in Korea considered the
about the applicability of Western feminist theories to establishment of the Ewha women’s studies
the role of women in Asia and felt that such theories program
should be closely examined. Their approach has thus A. praiseworthy
far yielded important critiques of Western theory, B. insignificant
informed by the special experience of Asian women. C. newsworthy
For instance, like the Western feminist critique of D. imitative
the Freudian model of the human psyche, the Korean E. incomprehensible
critique finds Freudian theory culture-bound, but in
ways different from those cited by Western theorists.
The Korean theorists claim that Freudian theory
assumes the universality of the Western nuclear, male-
headed family and focuses on the personality
formation of the individual, independent of society. An
analysis based on such assumptions could be valid for
a highly competitive, individualistic society. In the
Freudian family drama, family members are assumed
to be engaged in a Darwinian struggle against each
other—father against son and sibling against sibling.
Such a concept projects the competitive model of
Western society onto human personalities. But in the
Asian concept of personality there is no ideal attached
to individualism or to the independent self. The
Western model of personality development does not
explain major characteristics of the Korean personality,
which is social and group-centered. The ―self‖ is a
social being defined by and acting in a group, and the
well-being of both men and women is determined by
the equilibrium of the group, not by individual self-
assertion. The ideal is one of interdependency.
In such a context, what is recognized as
―dependency‖ in Western psychiatric terms is not, in
Korean terms, an admission of weakness or failure. All
this bears directly on the Asian perception of men‘s
and women‘s psychology because men are also
―dependent.‖ In Korean culture, men cry and
otherwise easily show their emotions, something that
might be considered a betrayal of masculinity in
Western culture. In the kinship-based society of Korea,
four generations may live in the same house, which
means that people can be sons and daughters all their
lives, whereas in Western culture, the roles of husband
and son, wife and daughter, are often incompatible.

A. Every graduate of Topnotch High School with an IQ of 150 has been accepted to at least one Ivy-League
school.
B. If a person is a high-school graduate and has an IQ of less than 100, he or she could not have been a student
at Topnotch High School.
C. At least one graduate from topnotch high school who has applied to at least one Ivy-League university has
been accepted to one of them.
D. If a high-school graduate has an IQ of 150 and is not attending an Ivy-League school, then he or she did not

2. In response to the increasing cost of producing energy through traditional means, such as combustion, many
utility companies have begun investing in renewable energy sources, chiefly wind and solar power, hoping
someday to rely on them completely and thus lower energy costs. These sources require significant initial capital
investment, but the operating costs are not so high; so the utility companies claim that they will provide stable
energy supplies at low costs. As one can easily see, these sources will be less risky for the utilities than non-
renewable sources, such as gas, oil, and coal, whose prices can fluctuate dramatically according to availability.
The claim of the utility companies assumes which of the following?
A. The public will embrace the development of wind and solar power.
B. No new deposits of gas, oil, and coal will be discovered in the near future.
C. The necessary technology for conversion to wind and solar power is not more expensive than the technology
needed to create energy through combustion.

develop carpal tunnel syndrome as are adolescents who do not play video games. Federal legislation that
prohibits the sale of video games to minors would help curb this painful wrist condition among adolescents.
The doctor’s conclusion depends on which of the following assumptions?
A. Most parents would refuse to purchase video games for their adolescent children.
B. The majority of federal legislators would vote for a bill that prohibits the sale of video games to minors.
C. Not all adolescents who play video games on a regular basis suffer from carpal tunnel syndrome.
D. Playing video games is the only way an adolescent can develop carpal tunnel syndrome.
E. The regular playing of video games by adolescents does not produce such beneficial effects as better hand-
eye coordination and improved reaction time.

4. Profits for one of Company X‘s flagship products have been declining slowly for several years. The CFO
investigated and determined that inflation has raised the cost of producing the product but consumers who were
surveyed reported that they weren‘t willing to pay more than the current price. As a result, the CFO
recommended that the company stop producing this product because the CEO only wants products whose profit
margins are increasing.
The answer to which of the following questions would be most useful in evaluating whether the
CFO’s decision to divest the company of its flagship product is warranted?
A. Does the company have new and profitable products available with which to replace the flagship product?
B. What percentage of Company X‘s revenues is represented by sales of the flagship product in question?
C. Are there additional features which could be added to the product and for which consumers might be willing
to pay a higher price?
D. Will the rest of Company X‘s management team agree with the CFO‘s recommendation?
E. Is there a way to alter the manufacturing or distribution processes in order to reduce the cost to produce the
flagship product?

Hi! This is Sandeep Gupta, the founder of

Top-One-Percent - GMAT 99th Percentile Club

Your-First-Million-Dollars - More Money, More Time, More Impact

The Jet-Set Speaker - Be The Millionaire Messenger

My biggest achievement is not that I have scored 99th percentile on the GMAT multiple times or that I have been
admitted to some of the most prestigious programs at Harvard. By using the same techniques that I used (OCTAVE,
PRIMEX, ACT, ANT, ACED, and LINGO) to get TOP-ONE-PERCENT (99th percentile) scores time and again, my
students have been able to get the same success (on more than 20,000 occasions)

My biggest achievement is:

I am able to transfer my "Success-DNA" to my students.

Autrri Chakravarti

Director - B-School Admissions Consulting Division (at Ivy-GMAT) and Expert Faculty in Test-Strategy (at Ivy-GMAT); B. Engg.
and MSc Finance from Imperial College, London; MBA from London Business School.

Imagine experiencing life in all its kaleidoscopic colors by the age of 18; imagine the pain of having to leave your
home country at the drop of a hat and having to settle in a foreign land with no money; imagine going through the
daily discrimination in the eyes of the native English population while trying to find your moorings in a foreign land;
imagine working as a barista at a café while your friends at the college are driving BMWs; imagine convincing the
Dean of Imperial College London to allow you to study without paying your tuition; imagine opening a chain of
restaurants (in metropolitan London) by the age of 21; imagine falling in love with a Russian woman 5 years older
and marrying her instantly; imagine getting an extremely coveted role in the biggest Investment Bank in the world
(Goldman Sachs); imagine writing the GMAT and making it to London Business School by the sheer force of your
compelling story; and imagine leaving all this success in a fit of that ―I-am-not-loving-what-I-am-doing‖ moment
after attending the ―Know The World In 24 Hours” (check http://the-bold-you.blogspot.in/ - it will take your
breath away – more than 200 people have endorsed it by writing personal comments) course run by Sandeep … and
imagine starting as a B-Schools Admissions Consultant at Ivy-GMAT, and LOVING every moment of it !!!

No! This is not the script for a Hollywood Blockbuster … this is Autrri incarnate – in flesh and blood.

Versatility epitomized: Amateur gastronome (he cooks really well), budding wine connoisseur, serial entrepreneur,
contrarian investor, passionate storyteller ... these are some of the ways in which Autrri would describe himself.

Autrri now calls Bangalore home, having spent the last 15 years living and working across the globe – London, New
York, Boston, Moscow, Singapore. After high school at St. Xavier‘s, Kolkata, Autrri self-funded his studies – through a
mix of scholarships, part-time work, sheer determination (and good fortune!) – first at Ashbourne College London (A-
Levels); then Imperial College London (B.Engg. & MSc. Finance); and lastly at London Business School (MBA).

Working at Goldman Sachs Asset Management (GSAM) and setting up his entrepreneurial ventures gave Autrri insight
into the inner workings of people‘s minds and the influence of cultural / geographic / socio-economic factors on the
way people behave. Ultimately, Autrri realized that it was this core (intrinsic) understanding of ―WHAT PEOPLE WANT‖
that set him apart. He brings this philosophy to his role as an admissions consultant and test-taking strategies
specialist faculty at Ivy-GMAT. Autrri has produced some exceptional results in the past; you can see the air of pride
in his strides when any of his students makes it to a top B-School.

To unwind, Autrri keeps himself up-to-date with the happenings at Old Trafford; tunes into his insanely huge (1960-
90) rock-n-roll collection; watches Tarantino / Nolan / Scorcese / Coppola … the list is endless ... movies; and
voraciously reads fiction.
