Lab Report 3

The document details experiments making particle boards from spent coffee grounds and bagasse. It describes preparing the raw materials and adhesives, then testing four board compositions with varying coffee ground and bagasse ratios and adhesive types. The experiments aimed to characterize the raw materials and find an optimal board composition.

Lab report 3

Title – density measurement of spent coffee ground and bagas

Objective – to know the density of the two smples for characterization of the raw materials.
Materials and chemicals:

 Beaker
 Distlled water
 Spent coffee grounds
 Bagas
Procedure :
1. 200 ml of distlled water was poured in a beaker
2. …..mg of the sample was added in the beaker
3. The volume of the water had risen to ….. ml
4. The rsults was rcoreded and the same procedure was done for both samples.
Results and discussion:
Initial volume of water= 200 ml
Initial mass of bagas = …..mg
Initial mass of coffee = ……mg

 Volume of water after the coffee was added = ……ml

 Volume of water after the bagas was added = …..ml
Calculations
Density= mass/volume
1. Coffee
V= v2 – v1
=200ml- ….ml
=
Density= …..mg/…ml
=
2. Bagas
V= v2 – v1
=200ml- ….ml
=
Density = …..mg/…ml

Experiments carried out in making a coffee board

After the raw materials were charachterized the next strep was preparing the adhesives used for binding
them. Two kinds of adhesives were prepared:
 Urea formaldehyde and
 Starch adhesive
The preparation of the two adhesives was as folllows:
Preparation of starch adhesive
Materials and chemicals used

 Corn starch
 Sodium hydroxode(caustic soda)
 Distlled water
 oven
 stirer
procedure:
1. 12 g of caustic soda was measured and diluted with ….ml of distlled water
2. 200 ml of distlled water was taken and was heated with 40 oc temprature
3. 125 g of corn starch was measured and was mixed with the heated water
4. The starch solution and the hydroxide solution was then mixed together and the adhesive
was done.
Preparation of urea formaldyhyde
Materials and chemicals used

 Urea
 Formaldehyde
 H2SO4
Particle board production
The production process was started by preparing the raw materials in the desired charachteristics and
followed by carrying out several experiments with different ratios of the raw materials.
Raw material preparation

 The spent offee ground which was collected from coffee shops was a powder with sieve size …
mm
 The bagas had a big size so the size was rduced to a sieve size of 2mm - 1mm
 The two adhesives were prepared
Procuction
4 different ratios of the raw materials were experimented
1. 0% coffee …% bagas ….% adhesive
2. 0% coffee …..% bagas….% adhesive
3. 50% coffee 50% bagas ….% adhesive
4. 25% cofee 75% bagas …% adhesive
Production proces
1. The coffee and the bagas were measured in the desired amount.
2. The adhesive was also maesured in the desired amount.
3. The measured raw materials were mixed for 10 minutes till they are mixed properly.
4. After they are mixed they were placed in the moulding metal and compressed for 30 min.
5. Finally the moulded product was heated in the oven and dried with sun light and be ready for use
