Ce 32-2, Design of Compression Members

The document discusses the design of compression members and how to determine their nominal compressive strength and allowable compressive strength. It covers different limit states including flexural buckling, torsional buckling, and flexural-torsional buckling. Formulas are provided for calculating the compressive strength based on these different limit states for various member cross-sections.

COMPRESSION MEMBER DESIGN

INTRODUCTION
Compression Members: Structural element that is subjected to axial compressive forces through its
centroidal axis.

𝑃𝑛
Design Compressive strength, ∅𝑃𝑛, and the allowable compressive strength, Ω
, are determined as
follows:
The nominal compressive strength, Pn, shall be the lowest value obtained according to the limit states of
flexural buckling, torsional buckling, and flexural-torsional buckling.
1. For doubly symmetric and singly symmetric mebers, the limit state of flexural buckling is
applicable.
2. For singly symmetric and unsymmetric members, and certain doubly symmetric members, such
as cruciform or built-up columns, the limit state of torsional or flexural-torsionalo bucklinf are
also applicable
