INTRODUCTION
Linux is a computer operating system which is based on free and open source software which can be installed on a wide variety of computer hardware, ranging from mobile phones, tablet computers, routers and desktop computers, mainframes and supercomputers. Linux is a leading server operating system, and runs the 10 fastest supercomputers in the world. Linux is a multitasking, multiuser operating system that is known for its stability. Although modified by numerous people, its robustness stems from its Unix-like architecture that keeps peripheral software components isolated from the core software (the kernel). It is Licensed under the GNU General Public License (GPL).
Software support: After-sales service provided by a software publisher or vendor in solving software conflicts and usability problems, and in supplying updates and patches for bugs and security holes in the program.
In response to customer demand and to the increasing maturity of the open source software market, Software support companies are now offering Linux support and open source software support in simpler, packaged, formats. Providers of open source support delivered a fast one-stop shop solution. If a client needs an answer, a new feature, or a fix, these software support companies can get it straight from the author or they can simply provide it themselves, without time consuming conditions, qualifications and referrals up the chain.
Helpdesk advice and diagnostic research Direct intervention to diagnose and resolve problems.
1. Helpdesk advice and diagnostic research: This form of open source software support is designed primarily for those who would expect their own technical staff to handle everyday problems, i.e. it backs-up and extends in-house resources when they are approaching their limits. Helpdesk support is normally staffed within office hours, but 24x7 supports can be arranged as appropriate. 2. Direct intervention to diagnose and resolve problems: This form of open source support essentially involves company staff and associates directly monitoring, configuring or managing your software systems, rather than merely advising your own technical staff on the matter. It is most commonly invoked to cover emergencies and one-off system changes. Intervention support (onsite or remote) can be provided out of office hours and for a single consolidated annual fee, subject to negotiation. As with helpdesk support, the single flat rate option is essentially for those who prefer predictability over the fine-grained savings that come with payment for exact work done.
