Worksheet 4

The document discusses pH scales and how pH is affected by H+ ion concentration. It explains how pH impacts acid rain, tooth decay, and digestion. It also compares the reactions of sulfuric acid and acetic acid, noting acetic acid is a weaker acid that reacts slower with magnesium and produces less heat.

Answer the following Questions based on the paragraphs given:

1)We can measure the pH value of acids and bases using a pH scale.Strong
acids have a pH value lying around 0,while strong bases have a pH value
lying around 14.This means ,more the number of H+ions in the solution, lesser
will be it’s pH. pH plays an important role in our everyday life.If the pH of
rain water is lower than 5.6,it causes acid rain.Low pH in our mouth causes
tooth decay while the acidic pH in the stomach helps in digestion of food.
1.1)What effect does an increase of H+ ions have on the pH of the solution?
1.2)Why is antacid effective in treating acidity conditions?
1.3)How does the flow of acid rain water into the ponds affect aquatic life.
1.4)Our body works within which pH range.

2)Sulphuric acid and acetic acid are two common acids. They both have a pH
below 7 and turn blue litmus red. Both react with alkalis to form salt and
water. This type of reaction is known as neutralisation reaction. An example
of neutralisation reaction is the reaction between sulphuric acid and sodium
hydroxide to produce sodium sulphate and water.Acids also react with
metals.Magnesium reacts with sulphuric acid to produce magnesium
sulphate and hydrogen gas.The reaction produces heat and hence is an

1
exothermic reaction.Acetic acid reacts slowly with magnesium and
produces
less heat .
2.1)Give the pH for acids.
2.2)State what is meant by a neutralisation reaction?
2.3)Name the salt produced when sulphuric acid reacts with sodium hydroxide.
2.4)State how the reaction with magnesium shows that acetic acid is a weaker acid.
