Module 2: OPERATIONS OF FRACTIONS

1. INTRODUCTION
In this module, the students will recall their previous knowledge on the steps in solving operations of fractions.
They will be able to realize the importance of having the knowledge of the operations fractions in real-business and
daily-life situations.

2. LEARNING COMPETENCIES
At the end of the module, the students will be able to:
    1. add similar and dissimilar fractions,
    2. subtract similar and dissimilar fractions,
    3. multiply fractions and mixed numbers,
    4. divide fractions and mixed numbers,
    5. answer business problems involving operations of fractions, and
    6. apply these operations in daily life situations.

4. LESSON 1: ADDING FRACTIONS

The knowledge of adding fractions is very important. We use it in our daily lives. In business, we often use
addition of fractions. An example of this is when we add the shares of partners to get one whole representing the
entire amount of profit of partnership.
In adding fractions, we first make sure that the denominators are the same before we perform the operation.
There are some rules to be followed in doing this.

1
A. Addition of Similar Fractions
To add similar fractions, simply add the numerators, copy the same denominator, and then simplify if necessary.
Example:
       Add the following fractions:
B. Addition of Dissimilar Fractions
Different units cannot be added so is true with fractions. We cannot add fractions with different denominators,

unless we express them in terms of a common denominator. In adding dissimilar fractions, we have to convert the
fractions first to similar fractions before we can add them. First find the least common denominator of the fractions.
The LCD is the least common multiple of the denominators of the fractions. Change each dissimilar fractions to an
equivalent fraction with the LCD as the common denominator, then add the fractions. Simplify if necessary.
