2. Differentiate accuracy and precision. 2 1 2
3. Determine the size of the best size wire needed to measure a M10 x 1.5 2 2 3
mm metric thread.
4. What are the gear parameters that could be measured using rolling gear 2 2 2
tester?
5. Define tolerance stack up. 2 3 1
6. Differentiate tolerance and allowance. 2 3 2
7. Write any two advantages of optical surface finish measurement. 2 4 2
8. What is the relation between cut off length and sampling length in surface 2 4 3
finish measurement?
9. List any four GD&T parameters that can be measured using CMM. 2 5 2
10. What is computed tomography? 2 5 1

Part – B ( 5 x 13 = 65 marks) Marks CO BL

11. a) What is measurement system analysis? Explain the need for 13 1 2
measurement system analysis.
Or
b) Explain the good practices of measurement to improve 13 1 1
measurement reliability.

12 a) Explain the construction of vernier height gauge. Discuss the 13 2 3

importance of vernier height gauge in measurement applications
with examples?

OR
b) Suggest suitable measuring instruments to measure any ten 13 2 3
dimensional features in the bracket shown in the figure. Provide
your answers in the form of a table listing the dimensional feature
and the corresponding measuring instrument.

Section K-K

13. a) Discuss the need for proper selection of tolerances for 13 3 4

manufacturing a given component.
OR
b) Design general type Go and No-Go gauges to check a 35 H8 / f7 13 3 4
hole / shaft combination. Assume gauge tolerance = 10% of work
tolerance. Neglect wear allowance.

14. a) Explain the importance of datums in inspection of GD&T 13 4 3

parameters. What are the different types of datums?

OR
b) What is bearing ratio with respect to surface finish measurement? 13 4 3
For any one application of bearing ratio measurement in
automotive industry, analyze the effect of bearing ratio on the
required functionality of the component.
15. a) Explain the working principle of touch trigger probe with a neat 13 5 2
diagram. What is meant by direction sensitivity with respect to
touch trigger probe?
OR
b) Explain the measurement of position accuracy of a machine tool 13 5 2
guideway using laser interferometer with a neat diagram.

Part – C ( 1 x 15 = 15 marks) Marks CO BL

16. A component has a square shaped slot of basic dimension *** mm (See 15 1, 2, 5
note below for the meaning of ***) with a tolerance of ± 0.25 mm. This 3
slot has to be checked using gauge block stacks (assembled gauge
blocks) which are to be used as Go- and No-Go gauges. The gauges and
the component are assumed to be at the shop floor temperature of 40 °C.
They have to be accurate at 20 °C meeting the required tolerance. The
thermal coefficient of expansion of the component is 20 x 10-6 / °C and
for the gauge is 10 x 10-6 / °C.

a) Determine the nominal sizes of the Go- and No-Go gauges to

check the slot.

b) If a 112-piece gauge block set is available, write down the gauge

blocks needed to form the Go and No-Go gauge stack of gauge
blocks considering the temperature conditions.

(Please note *** = Last three digits of your register no.+1)

(e.g., If your register no. is 2019111003, then *** = 003+1 = 4)
