Parent Guide Packet

Ms. Dutan, Room 207

Dear Parents/or Guardians.

Welcome to room 207. You are receiving this packet of information on my second grade
classroom procedures.

Throughout this packet I explain the rights, responsibilities, and expectations for the
students as well as for the teacher. In addition, please make sure you read the “Parent
Handbook” and “School Calendar” as well for more in depth information.

Please bring all your school supplies the first day of school. On that day, you will be
using door # 1 to enter the school, once you are inside your child should continue in
straight to the school cafeteria. Someone will guide him/her to the 2nd grade table,
where I will meet them.

To pick up your child at the end of the day, please wait outside door # 10 for
dismissal. I will bring students down at 3:15pm.

I am looking forward to working with you and your child this year. I know that it
will be a great and successful year. If you have any questions that aren’t answered in
this packet, please feel free to contact me at:

*Please save this packet so you can refer back to it as you need it.

General Information:

The first two weeks of school I will be getting to know your child and assessing skills in
spelling, writing, reading, and math. Throughout the first month, I will be teaching your
child classroom and school procedures. Do not worry if your child comes home and
says that they are reviewing what they learned in first grade. I have found many
students need a review to get them ready for school again. This also lends itself for us
to see where everyone is in need of help.

As a class, I believe in differentiated instruction. Therefore, I want all of our students to

be meeting their own individual goals and working at their level. After the first month, we
will be able to start working with small groups on writing, reading and math. The small
groups help to meet everyone’s needs. In October, I usually begin reading groups.
These are small groups of no more than five students working on comprehension,
vocabulary, decoding, and fluency. Students with different needs will take part in extra
groups each day to focus on remedial or extensions as needed.
This school year we will be using Skyline for the major subjects: Language Arts, Math
and Social Studies. However, I will continue using “Go Math” as a supplement to
reinforce some Math concepts.

Volunteers:

I love having parents help in and outside the classroom. Not only does the classroom
benefit from outside help, but also the children benefit as well from seeing their parents
take an interest in their school. If you would like to volunteer in our classroom, please
feel free to come to the main office and they will be able to guide you on the regulations
required by the Chicago Board of Education.

At the end of the first day of school, (Monday) students will be taking home a “Student
Folder” with all the forms that parents need to fill in and sign. Please send it back as
soon as you can.

If I receive all of the “Student Folders” by the end of the first week, we will
celebrate with popsicles for all the students.

Daily Folder:

I believe in the importance of maintaining a very close home/school communication and

how relevant this would be in the students’ behavior and academic performance. That’s
why it is vital that every student take home and bring back to school a “Daily Folder.”
This folder will have a labeled section “Home” and section labeled “School”. I have a
website at https://prussingroom207.weebly.com. Please refer to this website when
needed. Also, make sure that this folder is empty on a daily basis. Since students
will get overwhelmed when they need to find the homework among all the old papers,
many times they give up looking and they won’t turn in the homework.

Homework Policy:

In order to begin developing good learning habits at home, your second grader
will have homework. Please be in the habit of checking your child’s folder everyday
because our curriculum requires daily homework. I will go over the directions of the
homework every time so your child will know how to complete it. Students will be
receiving a math sheet as homework every day.

Science and Social Studies will be done in class. If they’re not finished they will take it
home as extra homework for the weekend. Also, students will have projects to work on
at home for each quarter.

In addition, to literacy and math homework, your child will also need to complete a
reading log 5 days a week. Reading Logs are sent home the first day of each month.
The students must read on a daily basis. The students will need to look at the week
we’re on and only do that week. Students are not allowed to complete future weeks.
EACH MONDAY I WILL CHECK THE STUDENTS’ READING LOGS. THEY WILL
RECEIVE A HOMEWORK STAMP IF COMPLETED. All work will be sent home in their
folder.

Students will copy their daily assignments in their “Student Agenda” from the board.
This agenda comes with the student to class every day.

I believe that the development of homework patterns begins in childhood and

shapes how your child will work throughout life. It is important that you help your child
establish good homework habits that they can take with them well into adult life. If your
child does not complete their daily work at school, I may also send it home as
homework so you will need to check with your child to see if they have additional work.
Homework is turned in the next day. Student s will receive grade each time they turn
in their completed assignments.

Grade Book

Parents can check the “Grade Book” on Aspen website every week as well the
teacher Website. This will help to keep track of your child’s grades and if they are
missing assignments. If you need help on how to login or use the Grade book,
please call the main office for assistance.

Lunch/Recess

Students have their recess and lunch from 10:45 to 11:30. I will be spending lunch time
with them. At the end we will clean up our tables; this is a way to learn good habits.

Specials:

Monday Music

Tuesday French

Wednesday Media (Bring head phones to keep in the classroom)

Thursday Gym (Tennis Shoe)

Friday Art

And finally, I would love to have your support throughout the school. If you have any
questions or concerns, please feel free to ask via email.

See you, August 21st at 8:15 a.m!!!
