How To Test A Protection Relay
Then this message will come, wait until detecting the device
A message will come that the device has successfully detected.
Insert the values which you want to inject on the software (normally 0.1 A for the 3
phases.
Open the CT ratio page on Enervista from setting – system setup – AC inputs – Current.
calculate the measured current. In our example it will be 1.5KA.
15000/1 = 1500/0.1
Open the measured current from Actual values- metering -phase current.
Make sure that reading is only positive sequence.
You can change magnitude, angle and frequency and check the effect on measured
values in the actual.
Insert the values which you want to inject on the software (normally 63.5 V (110 / √3) for the 3
phases).
Open the VT ratio page on Enervista from setting – system setup – AC inputs – Voltage – phase
VT connection.
calculate the measured voltage. In our example it will be 15.75 KV.
15.75 /√3 -110/ √3.
Open the measured current from Actual values- metering -phase voltage.
Make sure that reading is only positive sequence
You can change magnitude, angle and frequency and check the effect on measured values in the

5- Power measurement:
Insert the values which you want to inject on the software (normally 63.5 V voltage for the 3
phases and 0.1 A current for the 3 phases).
Open the VT and CT ratio page on Enervista from setting – system setup – AC inputs – Voltage –
phase VT secondary & setting – system setup – AC inputs – Current – phase CT
calculate the primary current and voltage values corresponding to injected secondary values.
In our example voltage = 15.75 KV, current = 1500 A.
Calculate the power from the formula P= √3VIcosᶲ, in our example P=√3*15750*1500*0.99 =
40.5 MW.
Open the measured power from Actual values- metering -power.
Make sure that reading is only positive sequence.
You can change magnitude, angle and frequency and check the effect on measured values in the
actual.

6- Frequency measurement:
Insert the values which you want to inject on the software (normally 63.5 V voltage for the 3
phases with 50 Hz frequency.
Check the measured power from Actual values- metering – frequency.

Open the function setting from Setting – Grouped element – Group 1 – generator unbalance or
double click on the function on protection summary.
Adjust the injected current values on the test kit software to match setting value (in our
example 0.82 (In = 0.804))
Open the front panel screen from actual values – front panel.
Configure the spare trip contact (P6b-P6C) as generator unbalance trip for function timing
checks.
Start injecting the current for 3 phases from both generator phase and neutral sides with small
unbalance in angles (5.6%) 235 instead of 240 and check trip indication on front panel and trip
time on the test kit software.
Change the magnitude, angle, frequency and injected phases and check the changes on front
panel and test kit software.
8- Auxiliary OV1:
Open the function setting from Setting – Grouped element – Group 1 – voltage element – Aux
OV1 or double click on the function on protection summary.
Adjust the injected voltage value on the test kit software to match setting value (in our example
5.1 V (pick up = 0.021*240 = 5.04)).
Open the front panel screen from actual values – front panel.
Configure the spare trip contact (P6b-P6C) as Aux OV1 trip for function timing checks.
Start injecting the voltage for 1 phase voltage (V4) from generator neutral only and check trip
indication on front panel and trip time on the test kit software.
Change the magnitude, angle, frequency and injected phases and check the changes on front
panel and test kit software.
Actual result values during testing
7- VT fuse failure#2:
Open the function setting from Setting – Control element – monitoring element – VT fuse fail
or double click on the function on protection summary.
Adjust the injected voltage value on the test kit software to satisfy the VT fuse fail (in our
example we inject ramp voltage starting from 63.5 V to 5 voltage for the 3 phases with
frequency.
Open the front panel screen from actual values – front panel.
Configure the spare trip contact (P6b-P6c) VT fuse fail 2 operated for timing checks.
Check alarm indication on front panel and operating time on the test kit software.
Change the magnitude, angle, frequency and injected phases and check the changes on front
panel and test kit software.
Actual result values during testing
8- Digital element:
Open the function setting from Setting – Control element – digital element 1 or double click on
the function on protection summary.
Adjust the injected voltage value on the test kit software to satisfy the digital element 1 (in our
example we inject aux voltage of 5.1 V voltage for the V4 phase.
Open the front panel screen from actual values – front panel.
Configure the spare trip contact (P6b-P6c) digital element 1 (59N operated) for timing checks.
Check alarm indication on front panel and operating time on the test kit software.
Change the magnitude, angle, frequency and injected phases and check the changes on front
panel and test kit software
