XL8 Console Software Update Tool
XL8 Console Software Update Tool
This application can be placed onto a USB key, once inserted into any bay of an XL8

will run on which ever GUI you have plugged the key into and will interrogate the
XL8 system and update the units connected.
Always make sure you have backed up all shows and Preferences from the
console before carrying out this procedure.

cancel.
Click on the Menu Button and scroll down to the Preferences tab, go into the sub
menu and scroll down to Upgrade. All of the tar files in the XL8Upgrades folder will
be displayed. Select the file you wish to run from here.
Running the XL8 Upgrade Utility
Connect the system as you would normally, making sure that all of the units you wish
to upgrade are connected and configured within the configuration page. Make sure
that all of the boxes are showing as connected on the diagnostics page.
Note: If you are just updating a single box running older code the box may appear red
but the link should be green, the box should be detected and updated.
Insert the USB key and click on OK or select the software from the drop down menu
The screen on the console will go blank and then boot the updater program. You will
see a black screen which states ‘Launching the Updater, Please wait…’
You will then after a short pause see the updater splash screen
This will then load a screen with all of the possible units that could be connected to
the system.
The updater will then ping each associated address to see what parts of the system are
present. Once the connected parts are detected they will be displayed on the screen.
By moving the mouse and pressing the left hand select button you can select specific
units to upgrade (the boxes will turn dark blue)
Alternatively pressing select all will automatically select all of the detected boxes.
Once you have selected the boxes you wish to upgrade click on the Upgrade Now
button.
First a messages checking you have adequate stable power will be displayed. There
are some parts of the upgrade process which if power were lost could potentially
damage the file structure and may require specialist programming from a Midas
Technician.
If you are confident your power source is OK click on Upgrade Now otherwise click
on Abort the Upgrade and find a better stable power source and re-start the process.
You will then be asked if you wish to back up the show and preference files from the
console. If you select yes please make sure you have enough space on the USB key
you are using.
Click on Yes Please if you wish to back the files up and No Thank You if you have
already back the files up or do not require them.
The system will then start the update showing you a progress bar across the bottom of
the screen. You can also see the progress of individual boxes by hovering the mouse
curses above the box.
Once completed all of the units on the screen will display Green Boxes.
NOTE:
• You will then need to power cycle all of the units once the upgrade is
completed.
• Once the surface has been power cycled you will then need to go into the
preference screen of each of the GUI’s and select the correct bay (they will
both default to bay1).
• The system preferences on the preference page will have returned to default.
Please check these settings and correct as necessary.
• You may find that sometimes one or more of the DSP’s may time out during
this process and be marked by a Red box with a cross through it. Just power-
cycle the system and re-try the upgrade selecting just the DSP’s that did not
upgrade. It is most likely that there was a time-out that occurred while the DSP
were upgrading due to traffic.
