 INTRODUCTION:
Starters are used to protect DC motors from damage that can be caused by
very high current and torque during startup. They do this by providing
external resistance to the motor, which is connected in series to the motor's
armature winding and restricts the current to an acceptable level.

 Types of dc motor starter:

 Two point Starter

 Three point Starter
 Four point Starter

1.Two point starter:

Manually operated face-plate type starters used for starting dc series

motors are commonly known as two-point starters as they have only two
terminals for their insertion of dc motor circuit.

2.Three point Starter:

A three-point starter is an electrical device, used for starting as well as

maintaining the DC shunt motor speed. The connection of resistance in
this circuit is in series which decreases the initial high current and guards
the equipment against any electrical failures. Here, the occurrence of back
e.m.f plays an essential role in operating the motor. This emf extends when
the armature of motor starts for rotating in the magnetic field by making
the action as well as opposes the voltage supply.

3.Four point Starter:

It consists of a graded starting resistance to limit the starting current and is

connected in series with the armature of the motor. The tapping points of
the starting resistance are taken out to a number of studs. It is called 4-
point starter because it has 4 terminals viz. L, N, F and
 Necessity of dc motor starter:
1.When the motor is in off condition, the armature is stationary and the back
EMF which is proportional to speed is also zero.
2.In Motor armature resistance is very low. If the rated voltage is applied to
the armature, it will draw heavy current many times that of full load current.
And there is more possibility of damaging the armature due to heavy
starting current.
3.So, we need to limit the starting current to its safe value. This is possible by
inserting a resistance in series with the armature at the time of starting for a
short period.
4.As the motor gains rated speed, back EMF is built up in it, and then the
starting resistance could be gradually cut off in step by step.

 Diagram of dc motor starter:

 Construction of 3 Point Starter:
1.The DC motor based 3 point starter mainly includes three terminals
namely L, A, and F. Here, L( line terminal) is connected to the positive
supply, A (armature terminal) is connected to the windings of an armature
terminal, and F (field terminal) is connected to the winding of field terminal.

2.The construction of 3 point starter includes a resistance ‘R’ for controlling

the initial current. The “H’- handle in the circuit kept in the OFF condition
with a spring ‘S’. The H-handle can be operated manually for motor
operation.

3.At the beginning of the motor position, the motor field winding gets the
total supply voltage, & the armature current is restricted to the particular
secure value by the resistance R.

 Working off a Three-Point Starter:

1. Having studied its construction, let us now go into the working of the 3
point starter. To start with the handle is in the OFF position when the
supply to the DC motor is switched on. Then handle is slowly moved
against the spring force to make contact with stud No. 1.

2. At this point, field winding of the shunt or the compound motor gets
supply through the parallel path provided to starting the resistance, through
No Voltage Coil. While entire starting resistance comes in series with the
armature. The high starting armature current thus gets limited as the current
equation at this stage becomes:

3.As the handle is moved further, it goes on making contact with studs 2, 3,
4, etc., thus gradually cutting off the series resistance from the armature
circuit as the motor gathers speed. Finally, when the starter handle is in
‘RUN’ position, the entire starting resistance is eliminated, and the motor
runs with normal speed.

4.This is because back emf is developed consequently with speed to

counter the supply voltage and reduce the armature current
