LO 03: Relate the principles underlying operating systems and system software
Introduction
Operating system is a very important subject domain related to Computer systems. It acts as the
interface between the user and the computer hardware. Operating system controls the execution
of application software and manages the computer hardware.
At present people use operating system daily and we can find Operating Systems everywhere
around us. So there are multiple reasons to behind the study of operating system. Having clear
understand about Operating Systems will help to learn how to manage the computer resources
appropriately. On the other hand, it will be helpful to solve any problem occurring in operating
system
So need to prepare a presentation by addressing all the task are given below.
1. Operating Systems can find everywhere around us. People daily use some type of
Operating systems in the day today work. What is an Operating System, types of
operating system and with their importance? (20 marks) LO 03
2. The operation of the simple von Neumann computer with its fetch/execute cycle has been
enhanced by several techniques to improve its performance. Describe the following
mechanisms that are found in most computers. In each case, state what the technique is,
how it works, and why it increases computer performance. (30 marks) LO 03
a) Cache Controller.
b) Virtual memory.

3. Logic circuits are playing a major role in today circuits design field. Explain the
following topics with relevant examples. (40 marks) LO 03
4. Now a day almost all the fields are using latest computer technology so describe the
computer types. (10 marks) LO03
