Course Description:

This course prepares students to meet the English language requirements for the BBA Program
by helping them improve their ability to read authentic professional/academic texts in the field of
Business Administration. The aim of the course is to produce students who have sufficient
knowledge of spoken and written English as well as important professional managerial
competences. Students not only acquire profound knowledge of general and specialist subjects
but also gain practical experience and adaptability that are highly relevant for any career in
business administration

Some of the topics of these texts include: The Manager’s job, International Management and
Cultural Diversity, Planning, Problem Solving and Decision-making, Organizational
Structure, Culture and Change, Staffing and HR management, Motivation, Leadership,
Ethics and CSR, and Business Communication.

Learning Outcomes:
At the end of this course, the student will be able to:

• Improve reading and writing in English for academic purposes


• Increase speed of reading
• Expand general academic and specialized business vocabulary
• Acquire "strategic reading" – reading for different purposes
• Use English to critically analyze current issues in management
• Use the Internet as a source for reading and research
• Practice oral presentation skills, including use of technological aids

Note: Participation &Attendance (10%). Class participating is an important part of the


learning process and students are expected to be able to discuss specific course topics to allow
interaction, exchange of opinions, and sharing of knowledge.

Attendance Policy

Students are required to arrive on time and attend all scheduled classes, to complete all
assignments by the due date, and to actively participate in class discussions.

Students who accumulate 6 absences are jeopardizing their good standing and are in danger
of failing.

Group Presentation
Students are divided into groups of 5 members. Each group is given 20 minutes to make a
presentation on one of the 10 topics covered in the course.

Criteria of essay writing

1. Task Achievement (TA) = how well you answer the question.

To increase score for TA:

o present the information accurately


o answer all parts of the task
o provide a clear overview
o highlight key features and support detail with data (Academic task 1)
o give a clear position, have a definite opinion (Task 2 and General task 1)
2. Coherence and Cohesion (CC) = how well is your text structured.

To increase score for CC:

o manage paragraphing
o make sure that each paragraph has a central idea
o use linking words and cohesive devices (firstly, in contrast, thus, in my opinion, to
sum up etc)
3. Lexical Resource (LR) = how good is your vocabulary.

To increase score for LR:

ouse a wide range of vocabulary


ouse less common lexical items
oavoid errors in spelling and word formation
4. Grammatical Range and Accuracy (GRA) = how good is your grammar.

To increase score for GRA:

o use a wide range of grammatical structures and tenses


o manage punctuation
o avoid errors in sentences
