CHAPTER 1

1.1 INTRODUCTION

Cigarette smoking is an issue, which is very rampant to the different part of the

world. Nowadays, adult people are not only the users of cigarette, because there are

some students particularly high school students are using cigarette, and school is the

place where they do smoking. According to Department of Health and Human

Services, approximately 4.9 million middle and high school students were current

tobacco users in 2018. Although tobacco use by adolescents has declined

substantially in the last 40 years, in 2018, less than one in 25 high school seniors was

a daily smoker. In 2018, less than a quarter of high school seniors reported ever

having smoked a cigarette. However, in 2018, almost one in 20 students in 12th

grade(five percent) was a regular, daily smoker -a number that has declined

dramatically from its recent peak of 25 percent in 1997. Cigarette smoking by

adolescents(measured as use in past month) in grades eight, 10, and 12 combined

has declined by more than half since its most recent peak in the late 1990s. In 2014,

about one in twelve(eighten percent) reported smoking cigarettes in the past month,

compared with more than one in four (28 percent) in 1996-1997.

In the Philippines, there are many young students who already used cigarette.

According to Youth Tobacco Survey by American College of Chest Phisicians(ACCP),

majority of the students surveyed started smokinf in their early teens. A third of the

respondents(29.6 percent) aged to 20 admitted that they have tried smoking. Of

these respondents, 18.8 percent are current smokers, with 4.7 percent smoking at

least one stick of cigarette per day. Of the current smokers, 62.7 percent are in
2

private schools. The survey also revealed that the social environment plays a role in

the smoking, and also for going back to smoking after quitting.

According to Lopez, the DOH survey found that an estimated 42 percent of students

have tried smoking cigarettes, with 15 percent admitting to have smoked their first

stick before reaching the age of 10. Twenty-two percent practically the same as

ACCP survey's 18.8 percent, admitted to being current smokers. The DOH also found

that tobacco exposure in the environment is very high, with over half(60 percent) of

parents of respondents smoking at home. The importance of peer influence also

came up, as three out of four students(75 percent) reported that their friends smoke

in their presence.

This topic is very important to investigate, to find the solutions on how to minimize

the smoking in school worldwide, in the country, and in the community, because if

this issue doesn't investigated, there is a big possibility that the nation will suffer

many kinds of diseases and pollution that rise from cigarette smoking. Cigarette

smoking, hereafter referred to "smoking", is the largest single risk factor for

premature death in developed countries. People already know that cigarette

smoking is an unhealthy, which some people engaged in, but the thing that makes

cigarette smoking an issue is that, it can cause many kinds of diseases, and those

diseases would be a big problem to the society.

The aims of this research is to study on how to minimize students smoking in school,

because the percentage of students who smoke nowadays was increasing due to

some causes. The title of this research is "Posters Campaigning Smoking Prevention
