● Before St.

Martin was sighted by Columbus and settled by the


europeans….. Who were skilled seafarers and inventive survivors: the
Amerindians
● The time line of the Amerindians habitation as wel as orgin was based by
using scientific methods to date the discover material
- The Lithic Age: the Am hadent develop technical skills other than
using flakes and flints to make tools
- The Archaic Age: New developments in techniques like polishing of
rocks, shells and bones for practical use
- Ceramic Age: The amerindians mastered pottery and agriculture
● On the dutch side Amerindian sites were discovered at places like Great
bay and Maho by amongst other archeologist Menno Smit and Jay
Haviser. However some site were also found on the French side.
● There were proof of Archaic Age amerindians on SXM
● FUN FACT: A unique discovery took place at the Hope Estate land located
in the hills near grand case : Hundreds of ceramic fragments, tools, shells
and reamains of human skeletons were found at the head of a tambrind
tree.

● Christopher Columbus was an Italian explorer and navigator who


completed four voyages across the Atlantic. Christopher Columbus was out
to obtain valuable goods like spices and silk
● King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of spain agreed to sponsor the voyage
wanting new lands and riches for there kingdom
● After more explorations in the caribbean on November 11 1493 that he
sighted and named St. Martin after Saint Martin of Tours (A city in france)

● When Europeans took over the island, most Arawak speaking


Amerindians and Carib Amerindians who lived there died this was a
result of being infected with European diseases. But also the fact as they
used them for slaves
● The first Dutchmen set foot on St.Martin in 1627, they settled on the
western side having interested in the salt for the benefit in Holland
In 1631 the island was claimed by The west India Company (the spanish
took over in 1632but lost interest shortly after)
● To prevent problems the French and dutch side decided on a partition
treaty to divide the island ( it was signed in March 1648)

Sunday, the 10th of October 2010 was a historic date for our tiny 37
square-mile Caribbean island: the southern part, called the 'Dutch Side',
became an independent nation within the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
