Part 6
Questions 30–34
Cook it!
When he was younger, thirteen-year-old Dara Reilly
enjoyed watching cooking programmes on TV. But it was
his grandmother who showed him how to cook. She could
make lots of different dishes and never needed to use a
cookbook.
Last year, Dara entered a five-day cooking competition for teenagers called
Cook It. On the first day, they were put into teams and given a box of food to
make a three-course meal. They were also given a laptop, so they could email
people they knew for ideas. Dara sent a message to his grandmother, who told
him how to make some special dishes with the things in the box.
There were some difficult moments for the young cooks. When they were baking
cakes, one boy put in salt instead of sugar. Another time, when they had to work
in the kitchen of a real restaurant, the members of one team couldn’t agree. And
when they had to boil a perfect egg without a clock, all the teams had problems.
Dara’s team didn’t win the competition, but he says he doesn’t mind. ‘I don’t think
the competition helped me become a better cook, but I’m still glad I entered. The
Cook It kitchen was amazing. It was so modern. But the best thing for me was
making so many new friends. That was great!’
Dara now goes to cooking classes. He’s going to start his own website soon and
give other teenagers advice on cooking great dishes. And who knows? He might
even open his own restaurant one day.
