1. *Why all the stories about idiots?

The stories about idiots were to show how most of the world thinks Chris wasn’t being smart going
into Alaska almost completely unprepared. Since Chris had traveled around the country, he thought
he was relatively prepared gathering advice and experience from other people. He overestimated
himself and thought that he could easily take on Alaska with barely anything to his name.

2. *How did Alaskan’s respond to Chris?

Alaskans thought Chris was a fool to travel into the thick of Alaska purposefully ill fitted for survival.
Since Chris had never gone to Alaska before, had almost nothing to his name, and was going there
because of a fiction book he read, Alaskans figured that Chris was an idiot.

3. *How big of an impact did he have in South Dakota?

Chris left a big impact on Carthage because he was just an interesting person to be around. He had
different interests from most people as Mrs. Westerberg stated, “We talked for hours about books;
there aren’t many people in Carthage who like to talk about books” (48). Chris talked with locals
about hunting, gathering food, and identifying edible plants. He stirred up conversation that not many
people would bring up. Chris left an impact with his personality and goals leaving plenty of room for
curiosity amongst the locals.

4. *Besides Chris, who else should shoulder any responsibility at all for his death?
Chris’ parents could potentially take some responsibility for Chris’ death. If they had actually
understood him and not tried to force him into taking a life path that they wanted rather than what he
wanted.

5. *What was ironic about a Vietnam Veteran starving to death?

Veterans have to survive incredibly harsh, stressful, and deadly situations and are typically trained for
everything that anything could throw their way. This guy survived Vietnam, went to Alaska to get
away from people and then starved despite likely going through worse situations.

6. Who was the Mayor of Hippie Cove? Be specific. No name needed.

The Mayor of Hippie Cove came from a very wealthy family, being the eldest stepson of a wealthy
governor. He was a great academic student and was likely fairly well off and lived a good life. He
eventually left school and academics all together. He wanted to see if people could live without
technology, hypothesizing that humans had devolved and relied too heavily on technology.

7. Explain how Carl McCunn, the truck driver who kept a detailed journal, died?
McCunn had been extremely prepared for the wilderness, especially prepared to take lots of photos
of the wildlife he was surrounded by. Unfortunately, he neglected to inform the pilot that flew him to
the remote lake he wanted to stay at that he wanted to be picked up again at the end of the summer.

8. *What does Westerberg regret not doing with Alex (Chris)?

Westerberg wishes that he had made Chris try to reconnect with his family after all this time. Initially
Westerberg kept to himself, thinking it wasn’t his business to ask Chris about his personal life, but
after Chris’ passing he wishes that he had at least tried to make him let his parents know he was
okay.

9. What did Chris’s letter to his sister say he was going to do?
Chris told his sister Carine that he was finally going to distance himself from his parents for good.
He explained how he was going to tell his parents that he was finally going to go to law school, make
his parents think that he was going to fulfill their dreams, then quickly cut it all off and never speak to
them again.
