It involves acquiring changes in the present knowledge, skills, habits, behaviors, or tendencies through experience, practice, or formal education. This definition connotes three things: first, the change is long-term; second, the source of change comes from within the external structures of memory or knowledge of the individual; and third, the change is attributed to the personal experiences of the learner inhis or her environment. Learning When knowledge or information is transferred to long-term memory which are further elaborated, rehearsed, and practiced, then learning happens. LEARNING IS PURPOSEFUL + Every human action is motivated or inspired by one's aims, goals, or intentions. Learning occurs because it is planned, desired, or even forced. But no matter what the case, there is always a purpose why a person seeks more knowledge. Learning requires learners! motivation and cognitive engagement to be sustained when learning complex ideas because considerable mental effort and persistence are necessary. LEARNING IS A RESULT OF EXPERIENCE Learners may be able to define particular terms, explain specific concepts, state general principles, or recite certain provisions of law. However, they can make them meaningful only if they understandthemwell | Characteristics enough and be able to use and apply them in real-life situations. of Learning Learning is often associated with a change in behavior as a result of experience. This SSS entails that learning comes with one's interaction with the environment. LEARNING IS MULTIFACETED Learning occurs in a complex social environment; thus, it should not be limited to being examined or perceived as something that happens on an individual level. Itis necessary to think of learning as a social activity involving people, the things they use, the words they speak, the cultural context theyre in, and the actions they take, and that knowledge is built by members in the activity. LEARNING IS AN ACTIVE PROCESS, + + Learning is an active process of engaging and manipulating objects, experiences, and conversations to build mental models of the world. It builds on prior knowledge and involves enriching, building on, and changing existing Characteristics understanding. of Learning You study ideas and use them in your real-life setting so that you can build your own idea to share with others and improve upon it. After SSS which your improved idea can then be passed on to others. BRAIN CHANGES When a person learns something new, the brain undergoes changes. The changes in the brain during learning are: 1. new nerve cells may grow and new neural networks will then be formed; 2 the strength of existing synaptic connections changes, thus functionally changing the connectivity and the activity within the existing neural networks in response to a sensory stimuli; and 3, new synapses are formed between neurons that were not connected before, thus effectively creating new networks of neurons that, when active, represent a new ae ava ae BEHAVIOR CHANGES Learning has been defined as a permanent change in behavior as a result of experience. Thus, if a student still applies some fallacies on argumentation or plagiarizes an article taken from the internet again, then, based on the definition, there is no learning because the change is not permanent. Learning requires continuity of behavioral ee aaa Learning something must not make us complacent since our brain has a use it or lose it behavior. If we do not use what we learn, we will lose or forget about it. Itis best that we keep on learning, adding up to what we already know, discover new things, and keep on practicing or putting into use what we know. It is not enough to learn something and just expect to remember it when needed after a long period of time. ae Our brain patterns are as unique as our fingerprints. This contributes to our realization that understanding the self is really incomparable with others. Knowing our own abilities and weaknesses can help us make the best version ourselves not in comparison with others but in comparison with ‘our younger self. We have the power to choose what we learn and what we want to do. ne Becoming a Self-regulated Learner Self-regulated learning refers to the learner's ability to regulate or control one's own learning and behavior. This entails that one's acquisition of knowledge and skills does not require external intervention. Self-regulated learning is not a one-size-fits-all exercise. Itis a process that should be tailored to suit your individual need for a specific learning task. Becoming a Self-regulated Learner Self-regulated learners: + Are aware of their own strengths and weaknesses + Utilize metacognitive strategies (for example, you question your learning and you monitor your own learning as well as your approach to academic tasks) + Attribute any success or failure to factors wit! personal control Becoming a Self-regulated Learner Barry Zimmerman, one of the researchers on the topic, emphasized that self-regulation is not a mental ability or ‘skill but a self-directive process whereby learners transform their mental abilities into skills. Self-regulation is a cyclical process. It promotes learning that will lead to a perception of greater competence, which sustains motivation to reach a particular goal or goals. Becoming a Self-regulated Learner An effective learner regulates one's own learning by: 1 planning and setting goals, 2 using strategies and monitoring performance, and 8. reflecting on one's own performance and adapting strategies to achieve the goals Once a learner becomes a good self-regulator, he or she develops a set of skills and habits to be an effective learner.
