F W No.4 Obstructed Distance

This document outlines fieldwork procedures for determining obstructed distances in surveying, including the cosine method using a third point, similar triangles method, and random line bisection method; it provides instructions for setting up and performing each method using common surveying equipment like tapes, range poles, and marking pins; the objective is to accurately measure distances that are obstructed by obstacles between two end points.

FIELD WORK NO. 4

DETERMINING OBSTRUCTED DISTANCE

Gospel Devotion
Psalm 127:1
“Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the LORD keep the city,
the watchman waketh but in vain”.

______________________________________________________________________

Objective: To determine the obstructed distance using tape.

A. Instruments:
1- 50 m tape
10- marking pins
3-range poles

B. Survey Team:
1- Head of team
1- Head tape man
1- Rear tape man
2-survey aids
C. Procedures:

1. By Cosine method
a) Designate A and B as the end points of obstructed line AB on level ground
and C as the third point.
b) Measure AB and AC diligently and layout a distance as shown.
c) Compute AB by cosine law.

AB = √ AB2 + BC 2 +2(AB)(BC) cos ACB

2. By similar triangle
a)Use the previous points A,B, and C.
b) On line AC set point D beyond the obstruction.
c)On line BC set point E such that the ratio of CE to BC equals the ratio of CD to
AC.

3. By random line and chord bisection (swing offsets)

4.
a) Let AB be the obstructed line. Set range pole at a random line AO that is
longer than AB beyond the obstruction.
b) With the B as center, swing an arc with a sufficient tape length that will cut the
line AO. Mark the cutting points as c and d.
c) A and C midway between c and d lies the perpendicular CB
d) Solve for AB.
