Motion Through Distance and Displacement.
This module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by educators
from public schools to assist you, the teacher or facilitator, in helping the learners
meet the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum while overcoming their personal,
social, and economic constraints in schooling.

To the facilitators:
As a facilitator, you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this module.
You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to manage
their own learning. Furthermore, you are expected to encourage and assist the
learners as they do the tasks included in the module.

To the parents:
As a vital partners in education, your support to your children’s learning at home, is
a great factor to ensure that they will become succesful in what they do. As a
parents, you are expected to monitor your children’s progress while they are
accomplishing the tasks in this module while at the same time, ensuring that they
learn independently.

The objectives set for this learning material will be certainly accomplished with your
steadfast guidance and support.

To the learners:
This learning resource hopes to engage the learners into guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Furthermore, this also aims to help
learners acquire the needed 21st century skills while taking into consideration their
needs and circumstances.
Furthermore, it is our objective that you will have fun while going through this
material. Take charge of your learning pace and in no time, you will successfully
meet the targets and objectives set in this module which are intended for your
ultimate development as a learner and as a person.
How to Learn from this Module
To achieve the objectives cited above, you are to do the following:
• Take your time reading the lessons carefully.
• Follow the directions and/or instructions in the activities and exercises diligently.
• Answer all the given tests and exercises.

EARTH AND SPACE

1 Describing Motion Through

Distance and Displacement

What I Need To Know

In this particular lesson, you will learn about the how to describe motion
using distance and displacement.

Competency: Describe the motion of an object in terms of distance or displacement,

speed or velocity, and acceleration (S7FE-IIIa-1)

Objectives: At the end of this module, you will be able to:

1. describe motion using distance and displacement; and
2. differentiate distance and displacement

What’s In

You’ve learned that friction and gravity affects the movements or motion of an
object. The horizontal movement of an object may slow down or go fast depending
on the amount of friction present. The vertical motion also is affected by the amount
of gravity in a certain area or heavinly body where the object is present.
Before going to the lesson, try to form the groups of words below using the
clue given.
CLUES
1. Total length
2. Shortest way

1. E T D N C I S A
2. T M D C E I S P A L E
Did you find the correct words? What are those? How could it be related to
motion of objects?

What’s New
In this module, you will learn how to describe the motion of an object
using distance and displacement.
Observed the following figures below.

Fig. 1.1 Distance and Displacement

What does the broken lines represent? How about the continuous lines?

What Is It
In science, motion is defined as the change in position for a particular time
interval. You can then start describing motion with the question, “How far did the
object travel?” There are actually two ways to answer this question. First is by
getting the total length of the path travelled by the object. In Figure 1.2 for
example, the dog ran 10m to the east, then 5m to the south, and another 10m to the
west. So it has travelled a total of 25 meters. The other way is by measuring the
distance between the initial position and final position of the object. Based
again on Figure 1.2, the dog has travelled 5 meters to the south.

2
Scientifically, the first measurement gives the distance travelled by the object
(represented by broken lines) while the second measurement gives its
displacement (represented by continuous line).
Distance is a scalar quantity where it has only magnitude and unit while
displacement is a vector quantity which has magnitude, unit and direction. When you
say 5m, then it is direction. And if you say 5m North, 5m upward, or 5m right, then it
is displacement.
The standard unit for distance and displacement is meters(m), the larger unit
is in kilometres(km) and the smaller unit is centimeters(cm).

What’s More
Instruction: Analyse the illustrations below and answer the questions that
follows. Consider the diagram in Figure 1.3. The positions of the objects are described in
the diagram by their coordinates along the number line.

-15m -10m - 5m 0m 5m 10m 15m

Figure 1.3

1. How far is the dog from the tree? ________________

2. How far is the tree from the house?__________________
3. How far is the dog from the house?__________________
4. If the dog runs from its current position to the house back-and-forth, how far
does it travelled?
5. Consider the dog runs from its current position towards the tree, then to the
house, and then go back to the tree, what is its displacement? What is its
distance travelled?

What I Have Learned

Using a Venn diagram, differentiate distance and displacement.

3
What I Can Do

Consider yourself riding a vehicle or just walking going to school from home.
Have you measured the distance from your home to school? How about your
displacement? Why it is important to know distance and displacement?

Assessment

TRUE OR FALSE: Write T, if the statement is true and F, if it is false.

1. A displacement is zero when the moving does not go back to its initial
position.
2. Distance is a vector quantity.
3. Centimeters is th standard unit for distance and displacement.
4. The total length travelled by a moving object is called displacement.
5. Displacement is describe by the magnitude, unit, and direction.
6. In a moving object, the initial position and final position shouldn be known to
describe displscement.
7. A scholl bus runs 25 km every day. 25 km is a distance.
8. Displacement is a scalar quantity.

Additional Activities
In your home, you try to determine the distance and displacement of
your travel from one place to another. Compare the two quantities by considering
when can these two be equal to each other.
