Activity 2 - Physics For Computing

This document provides an activity on passive and active components for electronic devices. It contains objectives to draw and describe the function of passive and active components, and illustrate common electronic symbols. The discussion defines passive and active components as small devices that control electric current flow in circuits. The activity has students draw and label diagrams of components like diodes, transistors, LEDs, integrated circuits and batteries as active components and resistors, thermistors, capacitors, inductors and switches as passive components. It also has students identify electronic symbols for these components.

Passive and Active Components

Activity 2

INTRODUCTION
Electronic devices like cell phones and music players use the information contained
in electronic signals to do a task. This can be in the form of making sounds or
images. These electronic signals are electric currents that flow through circuits in the
electronic device. These devices can contain several hundreds to thousands of
electronic circuits that can range from simple to complex circuits.

OBJECTIVES
1. Draw and give the function of passive and active components.
2. Illustrate the most common electronic symbols used on electronic schematics.

DISCUSSION
The electric circuits in electric devices contain a lot of electronic components. These
electronic components are small devices that use the information in the electronic signals to
control the flow and amount of current in the circuits. Electronic components can be
classified as passive or active. (Please refer to the PowerPoint for the differences of active
and passive components)

ACTIVITY

A. Draw and give the function of the following electronic components.

ACTIVE COMPONENTS FUNCTION ILLUSTRATION
1. Diode Diode allows an electric
current to pass in one
direction (called the diode’s
forward direction), while
blocking it in the opposite
direction (the reverse
direction).
2. Transistor A transistor acts as a switch
or gate for electronic
signals, opening and closing
an electronic gate many
times per second. It ensures
the circuit is on if the
current is flowing and
switched off if it isn’t.

3. LED LED is a semiconductor

device that emits light
when an electric current is
passed through it.

4. Integrated Circuit The function of integrated

circuit is to be a single
component that can
perform high-level tasks
such as amplification, signal
processing, or even
sophisticated digital
calculations as in the case
of microprocessors.
5. Battery A battery is a chemical
device that stores chemical
energy and converts it to
electrical energy.

PASSIVE COMPONENTS FUNCTION ILLUSTRATION

1. Resistor A resistor is an electrical
component that limits or
regulates the flow of
electrical current in an
electronic circuit.

2. Thermistor The main use of

thermistor is to measure
the temperature of a
device.

3. Capacitor A capacitor is a circuit

component that
temporarily stores
electrical energy through
distributing charged
particles on (generally two)
plates to create a potential
difference.

4. Inductor In power supplies, an

inductor’s role is to prevent
sudden changes in current
used.

5. Switch The function of an electric

switch is to regulate the
current between the load
and source of power. A
switch is used to turn
current to an electrical
appliance either on or off.
B. Identify the following electronic symbols

RESISTOR INDUCTOR
AMPLIFIER CAPACITOR
NEMA SYSTEM

SWITCH FUSE GROUND DIODE

TRANSFORMER
BATTERY ANTENNA AMMETER
