TB194.LISRelease of LIS-Link 2.01

This document describes a new version of LIS-Link software that allows standards and controls data to be sent from diagnostic instruments to a laboratory information system (LIS). The new version automatically generates data records for standard and control results and sends them to the LIS along with sample results. It provides details on how this standards and controls data is formatted and transmitted.

Product: LIS-Link Software TB 194

Date: March 18, 2011

Subject: Release of LIS-Link Software Version 2.01

Description
DYNEX LIS-Link Software provides a data communication interface between the Revelation DSX or DS-
Matrix software and an LIS system. The data transmitted to and from details test orders for the DSX or
DS2 to run and the results of the test orders after they have completed.

Revelation DSX software version 6.15 is required to send Standards and Controls to the LIMS host.
Earlier Revelation DSX versions will work with Lis-Link 2.01 but Standards and Controls will not be sent to
the host.

Matrix software has not yet been modified to send Standards and Controls. Matrix will work with Lis-Link
2.01 the same as it works with Lis-Link 1.08 and earlier.

Distribution
LIS-Link Software Version 2.01 has been developed and tested by R&D.

Purpose
Version 2.01 of LIS-Link is focused on the communication of assay data for assays using Standard and
Control result data. If the instrument returns Standard or Control results data, Lis-Link 2.01 automatically
generates data records for the Standard and Control data. These auto-generated records are sent to the
Host when the test sample results are sent to the Host.

There is no change to how the Host sends order requests to the instrument, or how sample results are
transmitted to the Host.

Features Added/Changed Since 1.08 Release:

• SWP 541621 – Transmit Standard and Control results to the Host.

Features Added/Changed Since 1.07 Release:

• UTF-8 Parsing support added to allow the proper interpretation of file data sent from DS-Matrix or
Revelation DSX systems by LIS-Link
• Serial transmission protocol used between LIS-Link and LIMS systems extended to support UTF-
16LE.
• Checksum calculation was modified to support delimiters whose character codes are over 127.

• An Advanced Serial transmission debugging mode can be enabled via the configuration file (please
contact Dynex if you need help enabling this feature—it is disabled by default)

How Standard and Control results data is sent to Host

This describes how Dynex Technologies sends measured Control and Sample results back to the LIMS
host. This is a low-level data protocol description of what gets sent between the Lis-Link service and the
client host. It’s up to the host to make human usable information out of this.

This shows a typical transaction where Dynex asks for work orders, completes the orders, and returns
results to the LIMS Host. There is no change in the data flow Host Lis-Link DSX/DS2, or in how
results for test specimens are returned. What’s new here are the returned controls and standards data
values.

There are 4 orders:
Sample Batch 56-1:4, using assay StdsCtrls. This assay has seven Standards (S1, S2,G, S7), and one
Positive Control (PC1). There are 40 possible specimens on the plate.

Sometime later Dynex completes the assay and returns results to the Host.
In this case the specimen data comes first. There is no change to specimen data transfer.

This is where controls and standards start

Measured standards and controls result data is sent as if it was a requested order. Lis-Link generates a
"Laboratory Patient ID" then uses it for the standard Patient Record | Order Record | Results Record data
pattern. The Host program has to recognize this unexpected patient as being control or standard data
and then process it accordingly.
The format of this generated Patient ID is:
Plate Well Location + _ + Sample ID + _ + Assay Name +_+ Plate ID + _ + date/time assay completed.
Plate Well Location = A1, A2, A3, G, F12, G12, H12.
Sample ID = name of that well, typically Sd for standard, Cd for control; where d is the sequence number
of the well. This is taken right off the template definition screen.
Assay Name = as the Host knows it. In this case “StdsCtrls”.
Plate ID = ID number/text unique to this plate. (Is this a barcode?). In this case “Fred”.
Date/time = date/time the assay completed, in the standard YYYYMMDDHHMMSS format.
For example here is a generated Patient ID, with each component highlighted in a different color:
A1_S1_StdsCtrls_Fred_20101208190720
Here is the standards and controls data, as sent to the host.
